Still a bridge too far? Biolinguistic questions for grounding language on brains

چکیده
In this paper we discuss how Fibonacci growth patterns are apparent in the structure of human language. We moreover show how familiar dynamics yielding these sorts of patterns in nature may be taken to apply, at some level of abstraction, for the human faculty of language. The overall picture casts doubts on any simplistic treatment of language behavior, of the sort stemming from classical behaviorism in psychology (which is again popular in contemporary computational models). Instead, it appears to be more profitable to study language as a complex dynamic system, emerging in human brains for physical reasons which are yet to be fully comprehended, but which in the end disfavor any dualistic approach to the study of mind in general, and the human mind in particular. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Language acquisition from a biolinguistic perspective.
This paper describes the biolinguistic approach to language acquisition. We contrast the biolinguistic approach with a usage-based approach. We argue that the biolinguistic approach is superior because it provides more accurate and more extensive generalizations about the properties of human languages, as well as a better account of how children acquire human languages. To distinguish between t...
متن کاملImpact of Ocean-Land Mixed Propagation Path on Equivalent Circuit of Grounding Rods
In this paper, the effect of ocean-land mixed propagation path on the lightning performance of grounding rods is investigated. This effect is focused on two problems. The first is extracting exact equivalent circuit of grounding rods in the presence of oceans. The equivalent circuit can be used in transient analysis of power systems in the neighboring oceans. In the second one, this effect on t...
متن کاملDisembodying cognition.
The idea that concepts are embodied by our motor and sensory systems is popular in current theorizing about cognition. Embodied cognition accounts come in different versions and are often contrasted with a purely symbolic amodal view of cognition. Simulation, or the hypothesis that concepts simulate the sensory and motor experience of real world encounters with instances of those concepts, has ...
متن کاملEnglish Querying over Ontologies: E-QuOnto
Relational database (DB) management systems provide the standard means for structuring and querying large amounts of data. However, to access such data the exact structure of the DB must be know, and such a structure might be far from the conceptualization of a human being of the stored information. Ontologies help to bridge this gap, by providing a high level conceptual view of the information...
متن کاملGastrografin-based conservative approach to small bowel obstructions: too far from a daily use
As known, small bowel obstruction is one of the most common emergencies in general surgery carrying a not negligible rate of morbidity and financial expenditures as far as high social impact . Peritoneal adhesions are the leading cause of intestinal obstruction up to 74% of cases. In spite of increasing incidence worldwide, current management still presents some “blind corners”, whose aspects s...
