چکیده

It is shown that in crystals the semiclassical quantization condition for energy levels of electrons in the magnetic field depends on Berry’s phase. When the electron orbit links to the band-contact line of the metal (i.e., surrounds it), Berry’s phase is nonzero and the quantization condition differs from that commonly used. This result is closely analogous to the Aharonov-Bohm’s effect provided the bandcontact line plays the role of the infinitely thin “solenoid” with the fixed “magnetic flux.” The predicted effect must manifest itself in oscillation phenomena for a number of metals. Quantum Adiabatic Approximation, Quantum Action, and Berry’s Phase

An alternative interpretation of the quantum adiabatic approximation is presented. This interpretation is based on the ideas originally advocated by David Bohm in his quest for establishing a hidden variable alternative to quantum mechanics. It indicates that the validity of the quantum adiabatic approximation is a sufficient condition for the separability of the quantum action function in the ...

Berry’s Phase and Fine Structure

Irrational numbers can be assigned to physical entities based on iterative processes of geometric objects. It is likely that iterative round trips of vector signals include a geometric phase component. If so, this component will couple back to the round trip frequency or path length generating an non-linear feedback loop (i.e. induced by precession). In this paper such a quantum feedback mechan...

Quantum beating in ring conductance: Observation of spin chiral states and Berry’s phase

– We propose and demonstrate experimentally a novel configuration for observing spin interference effects in mesoscopic rings. Using this configuration, in which the conducting ring and the tangential current lead form a single collimating contact, we have observed the spin quantum beating in the Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations. We demonstrate that the beating is the result of the superp...

Application of Berry’s phase to the effective mass of Bloch electrons

The Berry’s phase, although well-known since 1984, has received little attention among textbook authors of solid state physics. We attempt to address this lack by showing how the presence of the Berry’s phase significantly changes a standard concept (effective mass) found in most solid state texts. Specifically, we show that the presence of a non-zero Berry curvature in Bloch systems makes the ...

Berry’s Phase in a Helically Wound Optical Fiber

The quantum topological phase shift known as Berry’s phase is measured using a laser coupled into a helically wound optical fiber. In the context of this experiment, Berry’s phase corresponds to rotations in the plane of polarization of the laser beam due to an adiabatic transport of the beam’s momentum vector through a closed loop. Although parts of the experiment were awash in errors, valid d...
