چکیده
Objective: To compare the result of preoperative computed tomography (CT) and postoperative pathological measurements of tumor length in cases of carcinoma esophagus. Material and Methods: Computed tomography thorax and upper abdomen with oral and intravenous contrast was done of biopsy proven 100 cases of carcinoma esophagus. The patients were then referred to Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit, PGMI, Lady Reading Hospital for esophagectomy. Tumor lengths measured on preoperative computed tomography and on the post-operative resection specimens were recorded. Results: Out of 100 patients, 65 were male and 35 were female. Age ranged from 18 to 82 years with a mean age of 59.9 years. Middle and lower third tumors were present in 50 cases each. On CT scan the esophageal tumor length ranged from 1 cm to 13 cm with a mean length of 4.96 cm, whereas pathological measurements of esophageal tumor length ranged from 1cm to 12 cm with a mean length of 4.72 cm. There was a significant linear correlation between CT and pathology measurements of esophageal tumor lengths. Conclusion: CT assessments generally overestimate macroscopic esophageal tumor length and should not be the only modality used for management decisions.

Staging of Laryngeal and Hypopharyngeal Cancer: Computed Tomography versus Histopathology
Introduction: Computed tomography (CT) imaging is the choice of investigation for evaluation of extent of tumor under the mucosa, locally and regionally. This study was undertaken to assess the accuracy of preoperative CT imaging in the staging of carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, all cases who were clinically (c) staged T3–T4 and w...
متن کاملThe Effect Of P53 Protein Over-Expression And Its Clinical Features On The Response To Preoperative Chemoradiotherapy Of Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Background and Objective: P53 is a suppressive gene that plays a key role in DNA repair and apoptosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of P53 protein over-expression and some clinicopathological factors on the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Patients and Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, 44 patients with loc...
متن کاملE-cadherin Promoter Methylation Comparison and Correlation with the Pathological Features of the Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Esophagus in the High Risk Region
E-cadherin is among tumor suppressor genes which mostly subjects to the down-regulation in squamous cell carcinoma of esophagus (SCCE). The gene is tightly associated with the tumor invasion and metastasis in multiple human cancers, especially SCCE. CpG islands’ methylation in the promoter region of E-cadherin is among the mechanisms that have been suggested for the E-cadherin silencing, howeve...
متن کاملPredicting Unilateral Postlaminectomy C5 Palsy by Measuring C5 Exit Foramen Area on Preoperative Computed Tomography
Background. Postoperative C5 motor palsy is known as a common complication not only after cervical laminectomy but also after anterior discectomy. There is no consensus to verify any of the proposed mechanisms of C5 palsy following posterior cervical decompression. The authors of this article have found that C5 palsy is more common among patients with smaller C5 root exit foramen area. The purp...
متن کاملPotential of Baseline Computed Tomography to Predict Long-Term Survival of Patients With Locally Advanced Esophageal Cancer Treated With Preoperative Chemotherapy
In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of baseline computed tomography (CT) signs and postoperative TN stages on survival of patients with advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma with preoperative chemotherapy. Consecutive patients (n = 130) with preoperative chemotherapy and radical esophagectomy from January 2006 to December 2011 were enrolled in this study retrospectively. Pathological...
