Legacy Systems in Distributed Object Architecture

چکیده
In the article the role of legacy systems in the next generation distributed object architecture is discussed. Legacy systems represent an enormous investment in time and money and they embody a wealth of intellectual property, business rules and data. Replacing them with new generation systems is not possible over night. The way how to integrate these systems within distributed object architecture is described and a concrete wrapping technique is defined. It is shown how, through wrapping, these legacy systems can look out as distributed objects. Because of that, they can be reengineered step by steep in future as business needs dictate and resources are available.

Reengineering Legacy Systems Towards Web Environments
With the widespread use of the Web, distributed object technologies have been widely adopted to construct network-centric architectures, using XML, Web Services, CORBA, and DCOM. Organizations would like to take advantage of the Web in its various forms of Internet, Intranet and Extranets. This requires organizations to port and integrate their legacy assets to distributed Web-enabled environme...
متن کاملCan Legacy Systems Beget Product Lines?
In many respects it is easier to formulate an architecture for a family of products if one assumes that the systems are being developed from scratch. But the vast majority of systems development efforts today start from a cornucopia of legacy systems. Significant progress in component-based architecture, system understanding, object-technology, and net-centric computing now makes it possible to...
متن کاملA Method for Integrating Legacy Systems within Distributed Object Architecture
The ability of a new technology to reuse legacy systems is very important for its economic success. This paper presents a method for integrating legacy systems within distributed object architectures. The necessary steps required for integration are defined. It is explained how to define object interfaces. A detailed overview of how to implement the wrappers is given. The paper also answers the...
متن کاملCooperation of Heterogeneous Legacy Information Systems: A Methodological Framework
In many enterprises the presence of heterogeneous legacy information systems is pervasive, nevertheless the different component organizations need to cooperate in order to offer new services. The Distributed Object Computing is a valid approach for the definition of a cooperative model among heterogeneous legacy information systems, but few methodologies and architectures explicitly address the...

The Cooperative Architecture, defined in the context of the Unitary Network of the Italian Public Administration, is perhaps the most ambitious project undertaken by the Italian Authority for Information Systems in Public Administration (A.I.P.A.). The goal of the architecture is to facilitate the interoperation at the application level of the autonomous and heterogeneous information systems of...
