چکیده

Ionic liquids (IL) and hyperbranched polymers (HyP) represent new classes of nonvolatile selective solvents. By measuring vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) of azeotropic and close boiling systems in the presence of ionic liquids or hyperbranched polymers, separation factors are derived and the potential of using IL and HyP as entrainer for extractive distillation is discussed. Exemplarily, the superiority of IL to conventional entrainers such as 1,2-ethanediol is pointed out by simulating extractive distillation processes for the separation of the azeotropic ethanol–water system using ASPEN PLUS. The individual processes are energetically optimized and different unit operations for the regeneration of non-volatile entrainers are proposed. Both ionic liquids and hyperbranched polymers show remarkable selectivities, solubilities as well as low solution viscosities. They drastically increase the separation factor of many azeotropic and close boiling systems, which permits considerable improvements of processes such as extractive distillation.

New Solvent Systems for Distillation and Absorption Intensification

Solvents with an improved price/performance ratio allow for processes with less operating and/or capital expenditure. Therefore, from an industrial perspective, it is worth reviewing the R&D progress in designing new competitive solvents on a regular basis. This paper aims at discussing the potential of new solvent systems applicable as absorbents or entrainers for boosting the performance of a...

Ionic Liquid Selection and Performance Evaluation for the Separation of Methylcyclohexane/toluene by Extractive Distillation

The effectiveness of an extractive distillation process relies on the choice of the extractive solvent. The conventional methodology to select solvents is based on Group Contribution Methods. Ionic liquids have shown several advantages over conventional solvents used in extractive distillation and liquid-liquid extraction processes. However, there is no existing methodology to select ILs as sol...

Extractive distillation with ionic liquids as solvents : selection and conceptual process design

In this chapter, a solvent selection methodology for extractive distillation processes is applied to identify promising ionic liquid (IL) solvents for the following separation cases: methylcyclohexane/toluene, 1-hexene/n-hexane and ethanol/water. Thermodynamic and phase stability analysis are done in order to understand the strong interactions between the solutes and the ionic liquids (solvents...

Pyridinium based ionic liquids as promoters for a green and selective synthesis of N-monomethylanilines

Pyridinium based ionic liquids derived from β-picoline and n-alkylbromides were synthesized by a simple procedure at ambient temperature and then characterized. These neutral ionic liquids were investigated for their dual role as the solvent and promoter for the selective synthesis of a series of N-monomethylanilines using dimethylcarbonate as the methylating agent. A solvent free gree...

Study of Ionic Liquids as Entrainers for the Separation of Methyl Acetate−Methanol and Ethyl Acetate−Ethanol Systems Using the COSMO-RS Model

The separation of the nonaqueous azeotropic systems methyl acetate−methanol and ethyl acetate−ethanol was investigated with 13 cations and 27 anions as entrainers to identify suitable ionic liquids using the COSMO-RS model. It is observed that the cations best suited are imidazolium > pyridinium > methyl pyrrolidinium > octyl quinolinium. The lengthening of the alkyl chain of cations was also s...
