Structure of microemulsions from magnetic and electric birefringence measurements

2014 Magnetic and electric birefringence experiments have been performed on microemulsions of Na octylbenzene sulfonate (OBS)-pentanol-decane-water (with 0.3 % NaCl), in the homogeneous liquid region of the pseudo-ternary diagram. The Cotton-Mouton constant is related qualitatively to the structure of the microemulsion. It is discussed in terms of magnetic orientation of anisotropic rigid objects or of a very flexible surfactant film, and in terms of magnetic déformation. The order of magnitude of the bending elastic modulus of the surfactant film is discussed. J. Physique 43 (1982) 827-832 m 1982, : -.
