Bilateral additional bellies of the soleus muscle : anatomical and clinical insight
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction The soleus muscle arises primarily by two heads, which are united by a tendinous arch. The fibular head of the soleus arises from the head of the fibula and about third of the shaft; the tibial head arises from the soleal line on the tibia. Muscular fibers of the soleus end in a broad aponeurosis and unite with aponeurosis of the gastrocnemius to form tendo calcaneus. It is supplied by branches of popliteal artery and its innervation is derived from tibial nerve [1]. The current study demonstrates presence of additional musculo-tendinous bellies attached to the soleus both proximally and distally. Injuries of the distal third of the leg pose a clinical challenge due to closeness of the skin and poor circulation [2]. Appropriate coverage of these defects through flaps is being increasingly used by surgeons underlying the importance of a detailed knowledge of this rare musculotendinous belly. To the best of our knowledge, the bilateral presence of additional bellies of soleus muscle has been rarely reported.

Anatomical Study of the Digastric Muscle: Variations in the Anterior Belly Estudio Anatómico del Músculo Digástrico: Variación en el Vientre Anterior
The digastric muscle is formed by two muscle bellies: one anterior and one posterior, joined by an intermediate tendon. It is localized in the anterior cervical region. The anterior belly divides the region between the hyoid bone and the mandible into two: laterally the submandibular triangle, and medially the submental triangle. The anatomical variations described in the literature relate to t...
متن کاملA Rare Bilateral Variation in the Formation of Median Nerve
The median nerve is formed by fusion of lateral (C5-C7) and medial (C8, T1) cords from the brachial plexus. Bilateral variations in the formation of median nerve are very rare. One of such variations was observed during the dissection of the upper limb of approximately a 30-35-year-old man cadaver, according to Grant s method. The median nerve was formed by the union of three roots on both side...

Squeezing the calf was seen to deform the fleshy soleus causing the overlying gastrocnemius tendon to bow away from the tibia resulting in plantar flexion (Fig. 1). There was no longitudinal movement of the soleus while the gastrocnemius muscle bellies moved about 1 cm proximally, confirming our ultrasound findings. When the soleus tendon was divided the pro...

A bilateral gastrocnemius tertius muscle and a unilateral accessory soleus muscle were encountered during the routine educational dissection studies. The right gastrocnemius tertius muscle consisted of one belly, but the left one of two bellies. On the left side, the superficial belly of the gastrocnemius tertius muscle had its origin from an area just above the tendon of the plantaris muscle, ...
متن کاملReport of a Novel Bilateral Variation of Sciatic and Inferior Gluteal Nerve
Sciatic nerve is the thickest nerve of the sacral plexus, which innervates many muscles and vast areas of the skin of the lower limb. It leaves the pelvis via the greater sciatic foramen, emerges into the gluteal region by passing under the piriformis muscle, and descends beneath the gluteus maximus to divide into its terminal branches: tibial and common peroneal nerve at the superior angle of ...
