چکیده

Introduction A unilateral external fixator comprises of a collection of pins, clamps and sidebars to form a construct on one side of the limb that can be used to stabilise bone fractures and promote healing. An external fixator can allow the operator to alter the flexibility of the fixation. In the presence of flexible fixation, fracture healing happens through the creation of callus, which mechanically joins the bone together. There are 4 stages to this secondary bone fracture healing to include: inflammation, soft callus, hard callus, and remodelling stages. Excessive movement at the fracture site can predispose to non-union and creation of fibrocartilage. However, movement at the fracture site is necessary to stimulate the repair process in the early stages and the magnitude of strain at the site of healing has a role in predicting the tissue type created e.g. fibrocartilage or bone. The strain (εStrain) at the fracture gap is given by the relationship: ε Strain = ∆g/g0

Treatment of Pediatric Open Femoral Fractures with External Fixator Versus Flexible Intramedullary Nails

Background: In children, inappropriate treatment of open femoral fractures may induce several complications. A few studies have compared the external fixator with flexible intramedullary nails in high-grade open femoral fractures of children. The present study aims at comparing results of these two treatment methods in open femoral fractures. Methods: In this descriptive analytical study, 27 ...

The use of cerclage wire for surgical repair of unilateral rostral mandibular fracture in horses

Fractures of the rostral mandible in horses are the most common type of jaw fractures. The present study was performed for stabilization of rostral mandibular fracture with cerclage wire. In a retrospective case series, six client-owned horses with unilateral mandibular fractures were admitted to our clinic and suffered from a major gingival wound at rostral part of mandible. Rostral mandibular...

Rigidity of unilateral external fixators--a biomechanical study.

INTRODUCTION External fixation is the primary choice of temporary fracture stabilisation for specific polytrauma patients. Adequate initial fracture healing requires sufficient stability at the fracture site. The purpose of this study was to compare the rigidity of the Dynafix DFS(®) Standard Fixator (4 joints) with the Orthofix ProCallus Fixator(®) (2 joints), which differ in possibilities for...
