Application of the lndex of Biotic lntegrity to Evaluate Water Resource lntegrity in Freshwater Ecosystems

چکیده
The biotic and abiotic: processes involved in the environmental degradation of freshwater ecosystems are often complex, and their combined effects are not easily measured. Many human activities across the landscape contribute to degradation, including discharge of domestic, agricultural, and industrial effluents; cultural eutrophication; acidification; erosion and sedimentation following human modification of watersheds; straightening, deepening, and clearing of stream channels; drainage of wetlands and impoundments of streams; flow alterations caused by dam operation and water diversions; overharvest of biota; and introduction of nonnative species. Estimating ecosystetn health and integrity may be the best way to assess the total effects of these activities on aquatic environments (Karr 1991).

Variations in Nitrate and Phosphate Contents of Waters in the Southwest Caspian Sea
Science and technological developments provide new opportunities to exploit aquatic resource. Hence, it is important to understand biotic and abiotic conditions of aquatic ecosystems. Objective of this Paper is to report findings of the study of nitrate and phosphate contents of water and effects of other physicalchemical parameters in the southwest regions of the Caspian Sea in the spring and ...
متن کاملFreshwater Inflow Biotic Index (FIBI) for the Lavaca-Colorado Estuary, Texas
Freshwater inflow is an important source of physical variability in estuaries. Effects of water flow are dynamic, and it is impossible to sample all conditions as they vary over space and time. Benthos, however, are fixed in place, continuously sample the overlying water conditions, and demonstrate a variety of consistent responses to multiple sources of stress. Benthic indices of biotic integr...
متن کاملThe impact of climatic factors on bacterial indicators of freshwater quality
Most of microbial pathogens present in natural waters are of fecal origin. Thus detection of fecal contamination is the main aim of water quality monitoring. Routine bacterial indicators of fecal contamination are: the coliforms, fecal coliforms, fecal streptococci, Clostridium spp and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The present study aimed to determine the impacts of climatic factors on concentrations...
متن کاملPatch size-dependent community recovery after massive disturbance.
Massive anthropogenic and climate-related disturbances are now common in ecosystems worldwide, generating widespread die-off and subsequent community recovery dominated by remnant-patch dynamics rather than open-gap dynamics. Whether communities can recover and, if so, which factors mediate recolonization rate and extent remain unresolved. Here we evaluate recolonization dynamics of southern U....

Non-native aquatic species can be introduced in new areas through emptying of the ballast tanks, with a high impact on health, economy and environment. This is considered by the International Maritime Organization (IMO): (i) in 2004, the IMO adopted the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BMW Convention) in orde...
