Preliminary and incomplete Crops, Germs, and Whites: Exploring Historical Determinants of the Kuznets Curve and Causality from Inequality to Development

چکیده
This paper suggests a simple explanation for the cross-section Kuznets curve: endowments of crops and germs that resulted in a permanent European minority settlement are associated with high inequality and intermediate income. Where there was no European settlement, both inequality and income were low. Where Europeans came to constitute the overwhelming majority of the population, income was high but inequality was again low. The paper thus suggests that the variation in European settlement (which is correlated with income) provides an explanation for the cross-section Kuznets curve. European settlement is predicted well by crop endowments of different regions, mortality among the indigenous population, and mortality facing European settlers. Using crops and germs as instruments, the paper provides

Democracy and Environment Quality in Selected Countries: An Application of Panel Data
T his study investigates the relationship between quality of environment and democracy among different countries over the period of 2002 - 2012. Democracy and accumulated democracy indices have been considered as political inequality variables influencing the quality of the environment among different countries in the reduced form of Kuznets’ environmental curve (EKC) hypotheses mode...
متن کاملEnvironmental Kuznets Curve: new evidences based on a dynamic panel threshold model
This paper examines the non-linear relationship between CO2 emissions and economic development using an innovative dynamic panel threshold technique. The sample consists of 35 developed countries over the period 2003-2010. The empirical results indicate that there is a threshold effect in the relationship between economic growth and pollutant emissions as suggested by the environmental Kuznets ...
متن کاملExploring the Trade Openness, Energy Consumption and Economic Growth Relationship in Iran by Bayer and Hanck Combined Cointegration and Causality Analysis
This paper aims to investigate the direction of causality between economic growth, energy consumption and trade openness in case of Iran for the period 1967–2012. We apply the newly developed combined cointegration test proposed by Bayer and Hanck (2013). Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) is applied to determine the direction of causality between these three variables. The result of Bayer-Ha...
متن کاملIndustrial Growth and Sustainable Development in Iran
This study aims to measure how much the industrial sector suppresses the development process to be sustainable in Iran. We employ a quadratic-log form of regression model to test the Industrial Environmental Kuznets Hypothesis. In addition, we use a Vector Auto-Regressive model to estimate the nexus among the industrial growth, income inequality, environmental pollution, and energy consumption ...
متن کاملThe Political Economy of the Kuznets Curve
The paper provides a political economy theory of the Kuznets curve. When development leads to increasing inequality, this can induce political instability and force democratization on political elites. Democratization leads to institutional changes which encourage redistribution and reduce inequality. Nevertheless, development does not necessarily induce a Kuznets curve, and it is shown that de...
