Oils, Fats Andwaxes: Supercritical Fluid Chromatography

چکیده
The analysis and characterization of lipids andwaxes is of great importance in the food industry, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry, in surfactant and detergent technology and in natural product research. Lipid analysts have always been on the forefront of developments in separation sciences and new techniques in chromatography have often been developed for the separation of lipids. The Rrst application of gas chromatography, for instance, was the separation of fatty acids by James and Martin. Since then, all chromatographic techniques, including capillary gas chromatography (CGC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), thin layer chromatography (TLC), capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE), micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC), capillary electrochromatography (CEC) and supercritical Suid chromatography (SFC) have been applied to the analysis of lipids and also waxes which have similar physico-chemical characteristics. It is not possible to give a complete overview of the possibilities and limitations of each of these techniques in comparison to supercritical Suid chromatography for these analytes. For a detailed description of the use of supercritical Suids in the analysis of oils, fats and waxes, we refer to a number of recently published books listed in the Further Reading. The possibilities of both capillary column supercritical Suid chromatography (cSFC) and packed column supercritical Suid chromatography (pSFC) in the analysis of lipids and related compounds will be illustrated. The experiences gained in the authors’ laboratories over the years are summarized.

Separation of Free Fatty Acids using Supercritical Fluid Chromatography
The separation of free fatty acids was performed with supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) on analytical lab scale apparatus. Experiments were performed using fatty acids, which occur in vegetable oils in different amounts. Free fatty acids were analyzed without derivatization. Several stationary phases of packed columns and types of detectors were used to achieve efficient free fatty acids...
متن کاملSimulated Distillation and Molecular Weight Determination by Supercritical Fluid Chromatography
Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) has recently become a popular technique for the analysis of crude oils. It has been demonstrated for simulated distillation (1) and for hydrocarbon type separation (2-3). The advantages of SFC over gas chromatography (GC) in simulated distillation are the wider boiling range and lower temperature thus preventing cracking of heavy molecules during analysi...
متن کاملNon-catalytic biodiesel fuel production with supercritical methanol technologies
Study presents that supercritical methanol has the ability to convert oils/fats consisting of triglycerides and free fatty acids (FFAs) into fatty acid methyl esters through transesterification and methyl esterification, respectively, without any catalyst. This one-step method (Saka process) is simpler process realizing shorter reaction time and higher yield of methyl esters than those of the c...

The synthesis of biodiesel fuel from lipids (vegetable oils and animal fats) has gained in importance as a possible source of renewable non-fossil energy in an attempt to reduce our dependence on petroleum-based fuels. The catalytic processes commonly used for the production of biodiesel fuel present a series of limitations and drawbacks, among them the high energy consumption required for comp...

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is an innovative, clean and environmental friendly technology with particular interest for the extraction of essential oil from plants and herbs. Supercritical CO(2) is selective, there is no associated waste treatment of a toxic solvent, and extraction times are moderate. Further, supercritical extracts were often recognized of superior quality when compare...
