چکیده

We present preliminary results of an ongoing survey to probe the physical nature of a sample of open clusters ( POCRs, Bica et al. 2001) believed to be in an advanced stage of dynamical evolution. This kind of object is very important to constrain dynamical N -body models of clusters evolution and dissolution, and to understand the formation of the Galactic field stars population. Moreover they might represent what remains of much larger old clusters, which are of paramount importance to probe the early stages of the Galactic disk evolution. In this paper we present our results for NGC 1901.

Letter to the Editor Searching for open cluster remnants

The likely observational properties of the final stages of the evolution of open clusters are investigated by numerical calculations. It is found that they depend upon the membership of the cluster, the abundance of primordial binaries and the initial mass function. Remnants of poorly populated clusters are relatively easy to identify because of the presence of early-type stars. Remnants of ric...

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

Detecting the effect of Globular Cluster impacts on the disk of the Milky Way

The crossing of the Galactic disk by a Globular Cluster could produce star formation due to gravitational focussing or compression of disk material. We report on simulations of the effect on disk material which reveal that the crossing can sometimes cause local gravitational focussing of disk material. We also present the salient points of a little-known paper by Levy (2000), that shows that st...

Whiting 1 : a new Halo Young Globular Cluster

We report on BV I CCD photometry of a field centered in the region of the Galactic star cluster Whiting 1 down to V = 23.0. This cluster has never been studied insofar, and we provide for the first time estimates of its fundamental parameters, namely, radial extent, age, distance and reddening. Whiting 1 turns out to be a compact star cluster with a diameter of about 1. We find that the cluster...

Gravitational scattering of stars and clusters and the heating of the Galactic disk

Context. Could the velocity spread, increasing with time, in the Galactic disk be explained as a result of gravitational interactions of stars with giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and spiral arms? Do the old open clusters high above the Galactic plane provide clues to this question? Aims. We explore the effects on stellar orbits of scattering by inhomogeneities in the Galactic potential due to GM...
