Underspecification in Type-Logical Grammars
نویسنده
چکیده
Abstract. We show how in a mixed multimodal categorial framework unary modalities can be used to represent morphosyntactic properties of expressions. The residuation logic for the unary connectives, is used to define a feature checking procedure. Each mode represents some morphosyntactic feature. Underspecification is dealt with by assuming general modes that are related to specific instances by inclusion postulates. The distribution of features is regulated by means of distribution postulates. The mixed multimodal approach is compared to some other versions of extended categorial grammars that deal with morphosyntactic issues.

Semantic formalisms such as MRS [Copestake et al., 2003], UDRT [Reyle, 1993], or CLLS [Egg et al., 2001] provide elegant solutions for the treatment of semantic ambiguities in terms of underspecification. These semantic formalisms are not constrained to specific syntactic frameworks. MRS, for example, is mainly used with HPSG grammars, but may also be built from LFG grammars using co-descriptio...
متن کاملThe Incompatibility of Underspecification and Markedness in Optimality Theory
Underspecification in the underlying representation cannot give rise to marked structure on the surface, because Optimality Theory grammars force an output to be equally or less marked than the input. Underspecification can still account for alternations involving unmarked structure, but it is only useful when such alternations exist along with forms that do not alternate. The evidence for the ...
متن کاملPointing in Dialogue
A new approach based on experiments aiming at the integration of content originating from pointing plus definite descriptions (objects called “CDs”) in dialogue is presented. We develop it against the background of the early semiotic positions of Wittgenstein, Peirce, and Quine, the intentionalism of Kaplan, Neo-Peirce-Wittgenstein-Quine approaches and “mixed” points of view. Our experimental d...
