چکیده

If a linear block code C of length n has a Tanner graph without cycles, then maximum-likelihood soft-decision decoding of C can be achieved in time O(n 2). However, we show that cycle-free Tanner graphs cannot support good codes. Specically, let C be an (n;k;d) linear code of rate R = k=n that can be represented by a Tanner graph without cycles. We prove that if R 0:5 then d 2, while if R < 0:5 then C is obtained from a code of rate 0:5 and distance 2 by simply repeating certain symbols. In the latter case, we prove that d n k + 1 + n + 1 k + 1 < 2 R Furthermore, we show by means of an explicit construction that this bound is tight for all values of n and k. We also prove that binary codes which have cycle-free Tanner graphs belong to the class of graph-theoretic codes, known as cut-set codes of a graph. Finally, we discuss the asymptotics for Tanner graphs with cycles, and present a number of open problems for future research.

Pseudocodeword-Free Criterion for Codes with Cycle-Free Tanner Graph

Iterative decoding and linear programming decoding are guaranteed to converge to the maximum-likelihood codeword when the underlying Tanner graph is cyclefree. Therefore, cycles are usually seen as the culprit of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. In this paper, we argue in the context of graph cover pseudocodeword that, for a code that permits a cycle-free Tanner graph, cycles have no effe...

Which codes have cycle-free Tanner graphs?

If a linear block code C of length n has a Tanner graph without cycles, then maximum-likelihood soft-decision decoding of C can be achieved in time O(n). However, we show that cycle-free Tanner graphs cannot support good codes. Specifically, let C be an (n, k, d) linear code of rate R = k/n that can be represented by a Tanner graph without cycles. We prove that if R ≥ 0.5 then d ≤ 2, while if R...

Regular low-density parity-check codes from oval designs

This paper presents a construction of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on the incidence matrices of oval designs. The new LDPC codes have regular parity-check matrices and Tanner graphs free of 4-cycles. Like the finite geometry codes, the codes from oval designs have parity-check matrices with a large proportion of linearly dependent rows and can achieve significantly better minimum...

Convolutional Cylinder-type Block-circulant Cycle Codes

In this paper, we consider a class of column-weight two quasi-cyclic low-density parity check codes in which the girth can be large enough, as an arbitrary multiple of 8. Then we devote a convolutional form to these codes, such that their generator matrix can be obtained by elementary row and column operations on the parity-check matrix. Finally, we show that the free distance of the convolutio...

Codes and Decoding on General Graphs

Iterative decoding techniques have become a viable alternative for constructing high performance coding systems. In particular, the recent success of turbo codes indicates that performance close to the Shannon limit may be achieved. In this thesis, it is showed that many iterative decoding algorithms are special cases of two generic algorithms, the min-sum and sum-product algorithms, which also...
