Phosphatidylglycerol and Related Lipids

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Phosphatidylglycerol is found in almost all bacterial types. For example, Escherichia coli, a widely studied organism, has up to 20% of phosphatidylglycerol in its membranes (phosphatidylethanolamine makes up much of the rest with a little cardiolipin). In many bacteria, the diacyl form of the lipid predominates, but in others the alkylacyland alkenylacyl forms are more abundant. Phosphatidylglycerol is synthesised only in mitochondria of non-photosynthetic eukaryotes, and it is used as the precursor for cardiolipin, which is located in the inner mitochondrial membrane and is required for proper functioning of the enzymes involved in oxidative phosphorylation.

Reconstitution of bacteriorhodopsin vesicles with Halobacterium halobium lipids. Effects of variations in lipid composition.

Reconstitution of bacteriorhodopsin into vesicles has been studied using individual and defined mixtures of fractionated Halobacterium halobium polar lipids. The lipids varied greatly in their ability to form vesicles that translocated protons and showed stimulation by valinomycin. Thus, phosphatidylglycerol phosphate gave mainly lipid-protein aggregates, while glycolipid sulfate gave mainly fu...

Compositional and Thermal Properties of Thylakoid Polar Lipids of Nerium oleander L. in Relation to Chilling Sensitivity.

The polar lipid classes from thylakoids of Nerium oleander L. were studied with the aim of relating changes in their composition and thermal behavior with reported changes in the transition temperature of their polar lipids and chilling sensitivity of their leaves. With an increase in growth temperature, the transition temperature of phosphatidylglycerol increased from 16 degrees C to 26 degree...

The biosynthesis of phosphatidylglycerol.

Phosphatidylglycerol has been shown to be a constituent of the lipids of both plant and animal tissues by Benson and Maruo (1) and Strickland and Benson (2). It has also been detected in bacteria (3,4). Benson and Maruo (1) have called attention to the rapid rate of metabolism of phosphatidylglycerol in plants, and Kanfer and Kennedy 1 have obtained evidence that this phosphatide is a metabolic...

Metabolism and Function of Bacterial Lipids. Ii. Biosynthesis of Phospholipids in Escherichia Coli.

In a previous communication (1) we have described some of the general features of the phospholipid metabolism of Escherichia coli B as revealed by experiments in which growing cultures of this organism were labeled with pulses of 32Pi. In such experiments, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine were found to be the principal labeled glycerophosphatides in the fraction of lipids readi...

Biosynthesis of phospholipids in Clostridium butyricum: kinetics of synthesis of plasmalogens and the glycerol acetal of ethanolamine plasmalogen.

The biosynthesis of the plasmalogen forms of phosphatidylethanolamine (plasmenylethanolamine) and phosphatidylglycerol (plasmenylglycerol) and of the glycerol acetal of plasmenylethanolamine has been studied in cultures of Clostridium butyricum IFO 3852. When growing cells were pulsed with [32P]orthophosphate, there was a lag of 5 to 7 min between the rapid incorporation of label into the acylp...
