چکیده

This paper presents a method for constructing logical topology in multi-hop WDM networks hierarchically. Our logical topology can be built over WDM ring networks with only three ADMs (Add-Drop Multiplexers) and transceivers per node. We aim to realize low-cost WDMs that can be deployed for MANs and LANs. Due to well constructed hierarchical topology, both the maximum distance between two nodes and the number of required wavelengths on each optical fiber are reduced to the logarithmic order of the number of nodes. This contributes to mitigate traffic costs in WDM networks. Furthermore, we propose a node labeling scheme to achieve efficient routing without routing table lookup. From our numerical experiments, we have shown that we could construct a logical topology consisting of 1,000 nodes with a very small diameter and 16 wavelengths in a WDM ring network.

Preserving Survivability During Logical Topology Reconfiguration in WDM Ring Networks

We consider the design of reconfiguring logical topologies over physical WDM ring networks. The logical topology consists of the same set of nodes as the physical topology, and the links of the logical topology are lightpaths established (or embedded) over the physical topology. The logical topology is said survivable if the failure of any single physical link does not disconnect the logical to...

Traffic Grooming in Unidirectional WDM Rings with Bounded Degree Request Graph

Traffic grooming is a major issue in optical networks. It refers to grouping low rate signals into higher speed streams, in order to reduce the equipment cost. In SONET WDM networks, this cost is mostly given by the number of electronic terminations, namely Add-Drop Multiplexers (ADMs for short). We consider the unidirectional ring topology with a generic grooming factor C, and in this case, in...

Switching and Traffic Grooming in WDM Networks

We consider the role of switching in minimizing the number of electronic ports (e.g., SONET ADMs) in an optical network that carries sub-wavelength traffic. Providing nodes with the ability to switch traffic between wavelengths, such as through the use of SONET cross-connects, can reduce the required number of electronic ports. We show that only small switches distributed among the nodes in the...

Survivable routing in WDM networks - logical ring in arbitrary physical topology

In this paper we consider the problem of routing the lightpaths of a logical topology of a WDM network on an arbitrary physical topology, such that the logical topology remains connected even after the failure of a physical link. We focus our attention on the ring interconnection as the logical topology because it is widely used in many protection schemes. We first establish the necessary and s...

Effective traffic grooming in WDM rings

Much work has focused on traffic grooming in WDM ring networks. Previous work has considered many aspects of traffic grooming, including minimizing number of ADMs, minimizing number of wavelengths, single hub and multiple hub architectures, switching capabilities etc. In this work, we derive general and tighter bounds on the number of wavelengths in WDM ring networks that may be capable of swit...
