Rb-Sr closure temperatures in bi-mineralic rocks: a mode effect and test for different diffusion models

چکیده
Various diffusion raodels can be applied to Rb-Sr systems in cooling rocks. It is argued that a closed-system diffusioncontrolled model, inw3lving local equilibrium along grain boundaries, is most appropriate for describing the exchange of Sr isotopes between minerals in a rock sample during cooling. A finite-difference numerical method is used to solve the diffusion and mass-balance equations. Closure temperatures of mineral-pair Rb-Sr isochrons are predicted to depend on the factors involved in Dodson's infinite reservoir closure temperature formulation (cooling and diffusion rate, grain size and shape) of both the minerals. In addition, the closure temperature for mineral pairs is also dependent on the proportion of Sr in each mineral, which is dominantly a function of rock mode. This implies that Rb-Sr cooling ages from interbedded rocks having the same cooling history, but distinct modes, should differ: at slow cooling rates age differences could be > 100 Ma. Such effects, if unrecognised could result in erroneous cooling curves, but if recognised could be utilised in estimating true cooling rates. Our closed-system model :may also apply to other isotope decay schemes, such as the Sm-Nd system. A simple test is proposed which would allow the relevance of different diffusion models to be assessed.

Factors controlling closure in the biotite Rb-Sr system were investigated in a detailed study of an amphibolite-facies metacarbonate from the central Swiss Alps. Oxygen isotope data suggest that the rock cooled as a closed system. Calcite-dolomite thermometry temperatures of ;450°C to 500°C and feldspar thermometry temperatures of ;300°C to 400°C provide evidence of extensive Ca-Mg and Na-K exc...

Rb–Sr and U–Pb isotopic data for granulite facies rocks, forming textural relics with respect to eclogite facies metamorphism in the Western Gneiss Region (WGR) of Norway, highlight the importance of textures and mineral reaction kinetics for the interpretation of geochronological data. Studied rocks from Bårdsholmen, southern WGR, were subjected to granulite facies metamorphism at 955 ± 3 Ma (...

In the area SW of Arak, intrusives are emplaced into metasediments of early Mesozoic age. The intrusive rocks vary in morphology, structure and mineralogy, and exhibit various degrees of alterations; Rb-Sr geochronological data have been obtained to constrain their timing. There are three different groups of granitic rocks in the area: (a) the Astaneh intrusion, consisting of granite, biotite g...

The Homond Cu-Au porphyry prospecting area is located southwest of Birjand. Subvolcanic monzonitic to dioritic rocks are highly altered. The main alteration zones are: quartz-sericite-calcite-pyrite, propylitic and carbonate. The content of major, trace and rare earth elements (REE) of the rocks changes due to alteration. The changes are less in some such as TiO2, MnO, P2O5, Nb, Gd, Y, Eu and h...
