Oxidation-Reduction Potentials

چکیده
In the first part of the book purely physico-chemical considerations of redox potentials are lucidly and thoroughly dealt with, and in the second part their applications to physiology are systematically developed. To a student of physiology, who is not well versed in the principles of electrochemistry, this book will be of great value as the author initiates the reader first into those parts of physical chemistry, which are just necessary for a proper understanding of true reversible redox systems of importance in physiology. The reversible redox systems of organisms can be classified into two groups: (1) the negative systems, and (2) the more positive systems. The negative systems include cysteine, glutathione, sugar, echinoclirome, hermidin; ihe more positive include hsemoglobin-oxyhaemoglobin, the physiologically unimportant system of hajmoglobinmethsemoglobin and, the very important cytochrome and Warburg's respiratory ferment. The energy-level, expressed in electric potentials of systems formed of

Sulfhydryl Oxidation-reduction Potentials Derived from Thermal Data
The isolation of glutathione by Hopkins in 1921 and his experiments suggesting that this compound is probably an intermediary in biological oxidations and reductions awakened an active interest in the biological significance of sulfhydryl compounds in general (1, 2). Among the fundamental data pertaining to these compounds are their oxidation-reduction potentials. Soon after the discovery of gl...
متن کاملComputational prediction of one-electron reduction potentials and acid dissociation constants for guanine oxidation intermediates and products.
Reduction potentials and pK(a) values were calculated for intermediates and products along three major pathways for guanine oxidation using the B3LYP and CBS-QB3 levels of theory with the SMD implicit solvation model. N-methylated nucleobases were used as models for nucleoside species. Ensemble averaged reduction potentials at pH 7 (E7) were obtained by combining calculated standard reduction p...
متن کاملA relation between (NAD+)/(NADH) potentials and glucose utilization in rat brain slices.
Changes in several parameters involved in the control of metabolism were correlated with changes in glucose utilization in rat brain slices incubated under conditions which reduced glucose oxidation by 40 to 70%. The parameters included: the concentrations of ATP, ADP, AMP, and the adenylate energy charge; the cytoplasmic oxidation-reduction state ([NAD+]/[NADH]), determined from the [pyruvate]...
متن کاملIn situ measurements of dissolved oxygen, pH and redox potential of biocathode microenvironments using microelectrodes.
Biofilms are the core component of bioelectrochemical systems (BESs). To understand the polarization effects on biocathode performance of BES, dissolved oxygen concentrations, pHs and oxidation-reduction potentials of biofilm microenvironments were determined in situ. The results showed that lower polarization potentials resulted in the generation of larger currents and higher pH values, as wel...
متن کاملXcvii. Oxidation-reduction Potentials of Haemolytic Streptococci
PEROXIDE formation has a marked effect on the electrode potential behaviour of bacterial cultures and it has been shown in previous communications that the course of development of reducing and oxidising conditions in cultures of the peroxide-forming organisms haemolytic streptococci [Hewitt, 1930, 1] and pneumococci [1930, 4] differs characteristically from that in cultures of the catalase-con...
متن کاملEffects of nonpolar environments on the redox potentials of heme complexes.
A method has been described for measurement of the oxidation-reduction potentials of redox couples in nonaqueous solutions. This method has been applied to a study of the effect of a nonpolar environment on the redox potential of a heme complex. A positive potential difference of some 300 mV is observed for the measured redox potentials by comparison with reported values for the corresponding h...
