A Flexible Iterative Solver for Nonconvex, Equality-Constrained Quadratic Subproblems

چکیده
We present an iterative primal-dual solver for nonconvex equality-constrained quadratic optimization subproblems. The solver constructs the primal and dual trial steps from the subspace generated by the generalized Arnoldi procedure used in flexible GMRES (FGMRES). This permits the use of a wide range of preconditioners for the primal-dual system. In contrast with FGMRES, the proposed method selects the subspace solution that minimizes a quadratic-penalty function over a trust-region. Analysis of the method indicates the potential for fast asymptotic convergence near the solution, which is corroborated by numerical experiments. The results also demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the method in the presence of nonconvexity. Overall, the iterative solver is a promising matrix-free linear-algebra kernel for inexact-Newton optimization algorithms and is well-suited to partial-differential-equation constrained optimization.

A Sequential Quadratic Programming Algorithm with an Additional Equality Constrained Phase
A sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method is presented that aims to overcome some of the drawbacks of contemporary SQP methods. It avoids the difficulties associated with indefinite quadratic programming subproblems by defining this subproblem to be always convex. The novel feature of the approach is the addition of an equality constrained phase that promotes fast convergence and improves...
متن کاملCelis-Dennis-Tapia based approach to quadratic fractional programming problems with two quadratic constraints∗
In this paper, we focus on fractional programming problems that minimize the ratio of two indefinite quadratic functions subject to two quadratic constraints. Utilizing the relationship between fractional programming and parametric programming, we transform the original problem into a univariate nonlinear equation. To evaluate the function in the equation, we need to solve a problem of minimizi...
متن کاملA convergent decomposition algorithm for a class of linearly constrained optimization problems
In this work we consider nonlinear minimization problems with a single linear equality constraint and box constraints. In particular we are interested in solving problems where the number of variables is so huge that traditional optimization methods cannot be directly applied. Many interesting real world problems lead to the solution of large scale constrained problems with this structure. For ...

Sequential quadratic programming (SQP) methods form a class of highly efficient algorithms for solving nonlinearly constrained optimization problems. Although second derivative information may often be calculated, there is little practical theory that justifies exact-Hessian SQP methods. In particular, the resulting quadratic programming (QP) subproblems are often nonconvex, and thus finding th...
