چکیده

Learning analytics is the analysis of electronic learning data which allows teachers, course designers and administrators of virtual learning environments to search for unobserved patterns and underlying information in learning processes. The main aim of learning analytics is to improve learning outcomes and the overall learning process in electronic learning virtual classrooms and computer-supported education. The most basic unit of learning data in virtual learning environments for learning analytics is the interaction, but there is no consensus yet on which interactions are relevant for effective learning. Drawing upon extant literature, this research defines three system-independent classifications of interactions and evaluates the relation of their components with academic performance across two different learning modalities: virtual learning environment (VLE) supported face-to-face (F2F) and online learning. In order to do so, we performed an empirical study with data from six online and two VLE-supported F2F courses. Data extraction and analysis required the development of an ad hoc tool based on the proposed interaction classification. The main finding from this research is that, for each classification, there is a relation between some type of interactions and academic performance in online courses, whereas this relation is non-significant in the case of VLE-supported F2F courses. Implications for theory and practice are dis-

An enhanced semantic VLE based on schema.org and social media

After the arrival of the web in the 1990s, educational institutions started to maintain their learning materials within Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), as the web is a significant source of material for many students and teachers. However, there has been less development in the current VLEs in the past few years, which remain heavily centred on single institutions even though the web has ...

An investigation of the effectiveness of virtual learning environment implementation in primary education

Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), understood here as online systems supporting interactions between and amongst learners and teachers as well as access to resources and activities, have long been held to provide a range of benefits in further and higher education. For 2008, UK Government policy is far all pupils to have access to an online learning space, for many provided through a learnin...

The Influence of Virtual Learning Environments in Students’ Performance

This paper focuses mainly on the relation between the use of a virtual learning environment (VLE) and students’ performance. Therefore, virtual learning environments are characterised and a study is presented emphasising the frequency of access to a VLE and its relation with the students’ performance from a public higher education institution during the academic year of 2014-15. The main aim of...

Intelligent agent supported personalization for virtual learning environments

Virtual learning environments (VLEs) are computer-based online learning environments, which provide opportunities for online learners to learn at the time and location of their choosing, whilst allowing interactions and encounters with other online learners, as well as affording access to a wide range of resources. They have the capability of reaching learners in remote areas around the country...

Unravelling the dynamics of learning design within and between disciplines in higher education using learning analytics

Designing effective learning experience in virtual learning environment (VLE) can be supported by learning analytics (LA) through explicit feedback on how learning design (LD) influences students’ engagement, satisfaction and performance. Marrying LA with LD not only puts existing pedagogical theories in instructional design to the test with actual learning data, but also provides the context o...
