چکیده

We present the Wrst study of the eVects of ocean acidiWcation on settlement of benthic invertebrates and microfauna. ArtiWcial collectors were placed for 1 month along pH gradients at CO2 vents oV Ischia (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Seventy-nine taxa were identiWed from six main taxonomic groups (foraminiferans, nematodes, polychaetes, molluscs, crustaceans and chaetognaths). Calcareous foraminiferans, serpulid polychaetes, gastropods and bivalves showed highly signiWcant reductions in recruitment to the collectors as pCO2 rose from normal (336–341 ppm, pH 8.09–8.15) to high levels (886–5,148 ppm) causing acidiWed conditions near the vents (pH 7.08–7.79). Only the syllid polychaete Syllis prolifera had higher abundances at the most acidiWed station, although a wide range of polychaetes and small crustaceans was able to settle and survive under these conditions. A few taxa (Amphiglena mediterranea, Leptochelia dubia, Caprella acanthifera) were particularly abundant at stations acidiWed by intermediate amounts of CO2 (pH 7.41–7.99). These results show that increased levels of CO2 can profoundly aVect the settlement of a wide range of benthic organisms.

Predicted impact of ocean acidiWcation on a marine invertebrate: elevated CO2 alters response to thermal stress in sea urchin larvae

Ocean acidiWcation (OA) and the biological consequences of altered seawater chemistry have emerged as a signiWcant environmental threat to healthy marine ecosystems. Because a more acidic ocean interferes with Wxation of calcium carbonate to form shells or calciWed skeletons, future ocean chemistry may signiWcantly alter the physiology of calcifying marine organisms. These alterations may manif...

Silent oceans: ocean acidification impoverishes natural soundscapes by altering sound production of the world's noisiest marine invertebrate.

Soundscapes are multidimensional spaces that carry meaningful information for many species about the location and quality of nearby and distant resources. Because soundscapes are the sum of the acoustic signals produced by individual organisms and their interactions, they can be used as a proxy for the condition of whole ecosystems and their occupants. Ocean acidification resulting from anthrop...

Linking gene expression to productivity to unravel long- and short-term responses of seagrasses exposed to CO2 in volcanic vents

Ocean acidification is a major threat for marine life but seagrasses are expected to benefit from high CO2. In situ (long-term) and transplanted (short-term) plant incubations of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa were performed near and away the influence of volcanic CO2 vents at Vulcano Island to test the hypothesis of beneficial effects of CO2 on plant productivity. We relate, for the first time,...

Lost at sea: ocean acidification undermines larval fish orientation via altered hearing and marine soundscape modification.

The dispersal of larvae and their settlement to suitable habitat is fundamental to the replenishment of marine populations and the communities in which they live. Sound plays an important role in this process because for larvae of various species, it acts as an orientational cue towards suitable settlement habitat. Because marine sounds are largely of biological origin, they not only carry info...

How ocean acidification can benefit calcifiers

Reduction in seawater pH due to rising levels of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) in the world's oceans is a major force set to shape the future of marine ecosystems and the ecological services they provide [1,2]. In particular, ocean acidification is predicted to have a detrimental effect on the physiology of calcifying organisms [3]. Yet, the indirect effects of ocean acidification on calci...
