7.07 Use of Stable Isotopes to Understand Food Webs and Ecosystem Functioning in Estuaries

چکیده
Stable isotopes have been extensively used to trace element cycles and their incorporation into food webs. This chapter provides a brief introduction to the principles of using stable isotopes as natural or deliberate tracers in estuarine systems, with a focus on (1) assessing the origin and cycling of organic and inorganic elements (mainly carbon and nitrogen), (2) defining estuarine food webs, (3) assessing animal movement or migration, and (4) interpreting stable isotope records in biogenic carbonates as proxies of (past) environmental conditions. 143 Treatise on Estuarine and Coastal Science, 2011, Vol.7, 143-173, DOI: 10.1016/B978-0-12-374711-2.00711-7 Author's personal copy 144 Use of Stable Isotopes to Understand Food Webs and Ecosystem Functioning in Estuaries

Stable isotope analysis in fisheries food webs
Stable isotope analysis has been used as a technique to analyse fisheries food webs for a quarter of a century, and remains the principal method for determining energy and nutrient pathways from primary producers to consumers in aquatic ecosystems. Carbon isotope analysis has been used to distinguish autotrophs at the base of inshore and offshore fisheries food webs. The combination of nitrogen...
متن کاملThe contribution of different food sources to the diet of Parasesarma persicum Naderloo and Schubart 2010 in the mangrove ecosystem of Hara Biosphere Reserve; a stable isotope approach
The current study aimed to determine the isotopic composition of different food sources and their contribution to the diet of Parasesarma persicum inhibiting a mangrove ecosystem in the Persian Gulf. The potential food sources, i.e., Avicennia marina green and yellow leaves, Particulate Organic Matter (POM), Microphytobenthos (MPB), and Sediment Organic Matter (SOM) were collected for stable is...
متن کاملSpatial and Habitat-mediated Food Web Dynamics in an Oyster-dominated Estuary
Understanding spatial dynamics and creating spatial boundaries of marine food webs is an important topic that resource managers are beginning to understand. Food web structure, mediated by spatial and habitat differences, was examined in a subtropical estuary using stomach content and stable isotope analyses. The goal of this studywas to characterize the trophic structure in subtidal oyster ree...
متن کاملStable Isotope Application in Animal Nutrition Science
The application of stable isotope analysis (SIA) has become a standard scientific approach in Agricultural and Ecological researches and, more in general, in several disciplines such as biology, botany, zoology, organic chemistry, climatology, and nutrition. The main objectives of this paper are (1) to provide a simple definition of stable isotopes and (2) to illustrate analytical measurement m...
متن کاملQuantitative approaches to the analysis of stable isotope food web data.
Ecologists use stable isotopes (delta13C, delta15N) to better understand food webs and explore trophic interactions in ecosystems. Traditionally, delta13C vs. delta15N bi-plots have been used to describe food web structure for a single time period or ecosystem. Comparisons of food webs across time and space are increasing, but development of statistical approaches for testing hypotheses regardi...
