چکیده

[1] Peacock [2010, P10 hereafter] takes issue with several aspects of our recent article [Gherardi et al., 2009, G09 hereafter]: (1) our description of the modern Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), (2) apparent inconsistencies between modern circulation and our Holocene sedimentary Pa/Th bathymetric profile, and (3) our use of cores for reconstructing AMOC from locations that do not lie beneath the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC). We welcome the comment as it affords us the opportunity to clarify important aspects of our approach to studying paleocirculation and to address any potential misunderstandings arising from the wording of our original text.

231Pa/230Th evidence for a weakened but persistent Atlantic meridional overturning circulation during Heinrich Stadial 1.

The strength of Atlantic meridional overturning circulation is believed to affect the climate over glacial-interglacial and millennial timescales. The marine sedimentary (231)Pa/(230)Th ratio is a promising paleocirculation proxy, but local particle effects may bias individual reconstructions. Here we present new Atlantic sedimentary (231)Pa/(230)Th data from the Holocene, the last glacial maxi...

Modelling the relationship between 231 Pa / 230 Th distribution in North Atlantic sediment and Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

Down-core variations in North Atlantic Paxs / Thxs have been interpreted as changes in the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This modelling study confirms that hypothetical changes in the AMOC would indeed be recorded as changes in the distribution of sedimentary Paxs / Thxs. At different sites in the North Atlantic the changes in sedimentary Pa / Th that we si...

Nutrient conditions in the subpolar North Atlantic during the last glacial period reconstructed from foraminiferabound nitrogen isotopes

[1] Surface nitrate concentration is a potentially useful diagnostic in reconstructing the past circulation of high-latitude North Atlantic waters. Moreover, nutrient consumption in the North Atlantic surface impacts the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide. To reconstruct nutrient conditions in the subpolar North Atlantic region during the last ice age, a record of foraminifera-bound dN...

Opal burial in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean over the last 30 ka: Implications for glacial-interglacial changes in the ocean silicon cycle

[1] The Silicic Acid Leakage Hypothesis (SALH) suggests that, during glacial periods, excess silicic acid was transported from the Southern Ocean to lower latitudes, which favored diatom production over coccolithophorid production and caused a drawdown of atmospheric CO2. Downcore records of Th-normalized opal fluxes and Pa/Th ratios from seven equatorial Atlantic cores were used to reconstruct...

Early arrival of Southern Source Water in the deep North Atlantic prior to Heinrich event 2

[1] The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) plays an important role in the Northern Hemisphere climate system. Significant interest went into the question of how excessive freshwater input through melting of continental ice can affect its overturning vigor and, hence, heat supply, to higher northern latitudes. Such forcing can be tested by investigating its behavior during extrem...
