چکیده

Computer-aided treatment planning greatly improves the therapeutical index in radiotherapy. However, treatment plans need to be registered with the actual patient position on the treatment device before therapeutical irradiation can be started. Registration is commonly carried out by comparing a set of 2D control radiographs of the patient, the so-called portal images (PI), with 2D synthetic radiographs calculated from the 3D CT scan data with which the treatment plan was established. Computing these digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRR) is an important step in intensity-based PI to CT image registration methods. However, classic volume rendering algorithms are time consuming which turns the DRR generation step into a bottle neck of the registration process. The light field method known from Computer Graphics was recently proposed as a technique to precompute a part of the DRR generation process. We studied the suitability of the different existing light field parameterizations for the registration process and present two novel approaches that are optimized for the radiotherapy context. A geometric analysis of the projection space is carried out that makes it possible to significantly reduce the light field storage space requirements. A novel ray approximation error estimation is introduced which helps to find the best light field configuration in terms of rendering quality for a given projection space. Finally, a novel discretisation of the DPP light field is proposed which makes fast rendering possible while view dependent biases are significantly reduced.

Determination of geometric accuracy of radiotherapy fields by port film and DRR using Matlab Graphical User Interface

Introduction: Radiation therapy is one of the methods of cancer treatment. In this method, it is necessary to avoid harming the healthy tissues of the patient which is in the vicinity of the target, as much as possible. Treatment verification is one of the most important steps of radiation therapy which has two usual methods, using Port film and EPID. The accuracy and precision of treatment in ...

Fast Calculation of Digitally Reconstructed Radiographs using Parallelism

This study takes a look at different DRR generation methods for use in intensity based 2D/3D Image Registration. A specific emphasis is placed on whether the methods are trivially parallelisable with the aim to take advantage of hardware systems with more than one CPU. The ray casting algorithm and light field rendering are found to be suitable for this purpose. A discussion on the parallelisat...

Fast Intensity-based 2D-3D Image Registration of Clinical Data Using Light Fields

Registration of a preoperative CT (3D) image to one or more X-ray projection (2D) images, a special case of the pose estimation problem, has been attempted in a variety of ways with varying degrees of success. Recently, there has been a great deal of interest in intensity-based methods. One of the drawbacks to such methods is the need to create digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs) at each...
