چکیده

Abstract. We review the density of states and related quantities of quasi one-dimensional disordered Peierls systems in which fluctuation effects of a backscattering potential play a crucial role. The low-energy behavior of non-interacting fermions which are subject to a static random backscattering potential will be described by the fluctuating gap model (FGM). Recently, the FGM has also been used to explain the pseudogap phenomenon in high-Tc superconductors. After an elementary introduction to the FGM in the context of commensurate and incommensurate Peierls chains, we develop a non-perturbative method which allows for a simultaneous calculation of the density of states (DOS) and the inverse localization length. First, we recover all known results in the limits of zero and infinite correlation lengths of the random potential. Then, we attack the problem of finite correlation lengths. While a complex order parameter, which describes incommensurate Peierls chains, leads to a suppression of the DOS, i.e. a pseudogap, the DOS exhibits a singularity at the Fermi energy if the order parameter is real and therefore refers to a commensurate system. We confirm these results by calculating the DOS and the inverse localization length for finite correlation lengths and Gaussian statistics of the backscattering potential with unprecedented accuracy numerically. Finally, we consider the case of classical phase fluctuations which apply to low temperatures where amplitude fluctuations are frozen out. In this physically important regime, which is also characterized by finite correlation lengths, we present analytic results for the DOS, the inverse localization length, the specific heat, and the Pauli susceptibility.

Néel ordered versus quantum disordered behavior in doped spin-Peierls and Haldane gap systems

I consider a theoretical description of recent experiments on doping the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3 and the Haldane gap compounds PbNi2V2O8 and Y2BaNiO5. The effective theory is the one of randomly distributed spin-1/2 moments interacting with an exchange decaying exponentially with distance. The model has two phases in the (doping, interchain coupling) plane: (i) A Néel ordered phase at smal...

Keldysh technique and nonlinear σ–model: basic principles and applications

The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive pedagogical introduction into Keldysh technique for interacting out–of–equilibrium fermionic and bosonic systems. The emphasis is put on a functional integral representation of underlying microscopic models. A large part of the review is devoted to derivation and applications of nonlinear σ–model for disordered metals and superconductors....

Exactly solvable toy model for the pseudogap state

We present an exactly solvable toy model which describes the emergence of a pseudogap in an electronic system due to a fluctuating off-diagonal order parameter. In one dimension our model reduces to the fluctuating gap model (FGM) with a gap ∆(x) that is constrained to be of the form ∆(x) = Ae, where A andQ are random variables. The FGM was introduced by Lee, Rice and Anderson [Phys. Rev. Lett....

Critical points and quenched disorder: From Harris criterion to rare regions and smearing

We consider the influence of quenched spatial disorder on phase transitions in classical and quantum systems. We show that rare strong disorder fluctuations can have dramatic effects on critical points. In classical systems with sufficiently correlated disorder or in quantum systems with overdamped dynamics they can completely destroy the sharp phase transition by smearing. This is caused by ef...
