Heritable true fitness and bright birds: a role for parasites?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Combination of seven surveys of blood parasites in North American passerines reveals weak, highly significant association over species between incidence of chronic blood infections (five genera of protozoa and one nematode) and striking display (three characters: male "brightness," female "brightness," and male song). This result conforms to a model of sexual selection in which (i) coadaptational cycles of host and parasites generate consistently positive offspring-on-parent regression of fitness, and (ii) animals choose mates for genetic disease resistance by scrutiny of characters whose full expression is dependent on health and vigor.

Truthful signalling, the heritability paradox, and the Malthusian equi-marginal principle.
The article shows that heritable quality differentials are consistent with the Zahavi Handicap Principle (the Truthful Signalling Hypothesis (TSH)). Earlier analyses have assumed non-heritable quality. The crucial innovation is the Malthusian equi-marginal principle: under selection pressures the relative numbers of higher- and lower-quality organisms will change until, in equilibrium, not the ...
متن کاملIs the white wing-stripe of male House Sparrows Passer domesticus an indicator of the load of Mallophaga?
Parasites are organisms that obtain resources from their hosts thereby reducing the host's fitness. Common ectoparasites of birds are the feather or chewing lice, belonging to the order of the Mallophaga. These parasites eat barbs, provoking the destruction of feathers and the consequent deleterious effects on birds (Kose & Møller 1999, Pap et al. 2005). The deleterious effects of parasites on ...

متن کاملInduced Plant Defense: Evolution of Induction and Adaptive Phenotypic Plasticity
Induced defenses may evolve in natural plant populations where heritable variation in inducibility affects plant fitness. Although this has not been documented for any plant – parasite system, genetic variation in induction has been recently reported for several plant-parasite systems. Correlations between induction and fitness in variable parasite environments suggest that inducibility may ind...
متن کاملHeritable variation in resistance to gastro-intestinal nematodes in an unmanaged mammal population.
The impact of parasites on natural populations has received considerable attention from evolutionary biologists in recent years. Central to a number of theoretical developments during this period is the assumption of additive genetic variation in resistance to parasites. However, very few studies have estimated the heritability of parasite resistance under field conditions, and those that have ...
