It has been demonstrated that a as ade of a polynomial and an FIR lter an an el su h nonlinear e hoes [1℄. Another te hnique employs a hardlipping urve with LMS adapted saturation parameter [2℄. For both as aded systems we derive an LMStype adaptation using a ommon framework, and propose stepsize normalizations for both approa hes. To a hieve suÆ iently fast onvergen e for pra ti al use, an RLS-type adaptation for the polynomial is derived and experimentally veri ed. Both te hniques are ompared using real hardware and spee h signals, and show robust onvergen e behaviour and an e ho redu tion gain of up to 10 dB ompared to a linear AEC.

Adaptive Volterra filters for nonlinear acoustic echo cancellation
More than 20 years ago it was shown that adaptive Volterra filters can be used for telephone echo cancellation, but the inherent need for a large number of coefficients has inhibited their practical use. Recently, first attempts have been made to combat nonlinearities in the acoustic echo path of hands-free telephones, which are caused by low-cost audio components. As these attempts are based o...
متن کاملGradient-Limited Affine Projection Algorithm for Double-Talk-Robust and Fast-Converging Acoustic Echo Cancellation
We propose a gradient-limited affine projection algorithm (GL-APA), which can achieve fast and double-talk-robust convergence in acoustic echo cancellation. GL-APA is derived from the M-estimationbased nonlinear cost function extended for evaluating multiple error signals dealt with in the affine projection algorithm (APA). By considering the nonlinearity of the gradient, we carefully formulate...
متن کاملCascade Adaptive Filters and Applications to Acoustic Echo Cancellation
Typical approaches to acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) in mobile telephones employ adaptive linear algorithms, such as the normalized least mean squares (NLMS) algorithm. Smaller, cheaper components on these devices introduce nonlinearities into the echo path, which adversely affect performance of linear AEC systems and necessitate means of nonlinear compensation. Memoryless nonlinear blocks th...
متن کاملNonlinear acoustic echo cancellation with 2nd order adaptive Volterra filters
Acoustic echo cancellers in today' s speakerphones or video conferencing systems rely on the assumption of a linear echo path. Low-cost audio equipment or constraints of portable communication systems cause nonlinear distortions, which limit the echo return loss enhancement achievable by linear adaptation schemes. These distortions are a superposition of different effects, which can be modelled...
متن کاملNonlinear Echo Cancellation for Hands-free Speakerphones
Nonlinearities in the amplifier and loudspeaker of hands-free speakerphones limit the performance of linear adaptive acoustic echo cancellers, necessitating the use of nonlinear cancellation schemes. A nonlinear acoustic echo canceller based on the WienerHammerstein model structure of a cascade of linear, memoryless nonlinear, and linear elements is proposed. By modeling the true structure of t...
