چکیده

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer, may display various clinical aspects, frequently has subclinical extension, and through local invasion may induce important tissue damage. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a modern technique that allows a non-invasive investigation of skin structure with a nearly histological resolution, and may achieve an optimal in vivo evaluation of skin tumors in combination with dermoscopy. We report a case of nodular BCC with areas of cystic degeneration in which in vivo RCM and dermoscopy evaluation enabled an accurate diagnosis and a detailed preoperative evaluation of tumor margins allowing the optimization of surgical treatment, with best aesthetic and functional results.

Variations of the Normal Human Limbal Stem Cells Detected by In Vivo Confocal Microscopy

Background  To report normal variations of the limbal structures using in vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy. Methods: This was a retrospective study of fourteen eyes from 11 healthy individuals. Confocal imaging of cornea and limbus was performed using Heidelberg Retina Tomograph III Rostock Corneal Module. Results: The typical structure of the palisades of Vogt (POV) was detected ...

Dermoscopic and reflectance confocal microscopy features of two cases of vulvar basal cell carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignant skin cancer. Its genital localization is rare, and the diagnosis in this site could be challenging. Here, we report two patients with vulvar BCC and describe their clinical, dermoscopic and in vivo and ex vivo reflectance confocal microscopic (RCM) features. Dermoscopy and RCM can be useful tools for helping the clinical diagnosis of vulva...

Pigmented Nodular Basal Cell Carcinomas in Differential Diagnosis with Nodular Melanomas: Confocal Microscopy as a Reliable Tool for In Vivo Histologic Diagnosis

Nodular basal cell carcinoma, especially when pigmented, can be in differential diagnosis with nodular melanomas, clinically and dermoscopically. Reflectance confocal microscopy is a relatively new imaging technique that permits to evaluate in vivo skin tumors with a nearly histological resolution. Here, we present four cases of challenging nodular lesions where confocal microscopy was able to ...

Reflectance confocal microscopy and dermoscopy for in vivo, non-invasive skin imaging of superficial basal cell carcinoma

Superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC) is the second most frequent histological type of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), usually requiring a skin biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. It usually appears on the upper trunk and shoulders as erythematous and squamous lesions. Although it has a slow growth and seldom metastasizes, early diagnosis and management are of crucial importance in preventing local ...

Dendritic cells in pigmented basal cell carcinoma: a relevant finding by reflectance-mode confocal microscopy.

BACKGROUND Reflectance-mode confocal microscopy (RCM) is a new approach for the in vivo diagnosis of skin tumors. A few studies of RCM on basal cell carcinoma (BCC) have provided specific diagnostic criteria, but large studies on pigmented basal cell carcinoma are lacking. Proliferation of large dendritic-shaped cells within a melanocytic tumor has been associated with the diagnosis of melanoma...
