چکیده

Introduction Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, which leads to bone fragility and increased fracture risk. For prolonged bed rest, immobilization, and space flight, disuse atrophy of bone is prevalent in many animals including humans. However, black bears may not develop osteopenia during long periods of disuse (i.e., hibernation) to the extent that other animals do and they may have a mechanism for more rapid and complete bone recovery. The specific aims of this study were to evaluate the histological, compositional, and mechanical characteristics of tibias from annually hibernating black bears. Black bears are inactive during annual hibernation periods (approximately 6 months) and osteoclastic resorption increases during this time. However, because osteoblastic function does not decline during hibernation and is elevated during remobilization in the spring, we hypothesized that cortical bone porosity, mineral content, and mechanical properties are not compromised with aging despite annual 6 month periods of disuse.

Bone Strength Is Not Compromised with Aging in Black Bears (ursus Americanus) despite Annual Periods of Disuse (hibernation)

Disuse osteoporosis is well documented in humans and animals including hibernating bats and ground squirrels (Kwiecinski, 1987). A reduction in bone’s mechanical stress environment stimulates increased osteoclastic bone resorption coupled with decreased osteoblastic bone formation (Weinreb, 1989). This leads to bone loss and decreased material properties (Kaneps, 1997). Upon remobilization afte...

Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) and black bears (Ursus americanus) prevent trabecular bone loss during disuse (hibernation).

Disuse typically causes an imbalance in bone formation and bone resorption, leading to losses of cortical and trabecular bone. In contrast, bears maintain balanced intracortical remodeling and prevent cortical bone loss during disuse (hibernation). Trabecular bone, however, is more detrimentally affected than cortical bone in other animal models of disuse. Here we investigated the effects of hi...

Limited Associations between Keel Bone Damage and Bone Properties Measured with Computer Tomography, Three-Point Bending Test, and Analysis of Minerals in Swiss Laying Hens

Keel bone damage is a wide-spread welfare problem in laying hens. It is unclear so far whether bone quality relates to keel bone damage. The goal of the present study was to detect possible associations between keel bone damage and bone properties of intact and damaged keel bones and of tibias in end-of-lay hens raised in loose housing systems. Bones were palpated and examined by peripheral qua...

Relative Contributions of Material Characteristics to Failure Properties of Cortical Bone in Strain-mode-specific Loading: Implications for Fragility in Osteoporosis & Aging

Recent studies of mechanical properties of cortical bone in osteoporotic and aged skeletons reveal significant reductions in toughness or energy absorption -a hallmark of post-yield behavior (McCalden et al., 1993). Variations in mineral content (% ash), porosity, or secondary osteon population density (OPD), however, can not explain a large percentage of the variance in these mechanical test d...

A refined inverse hyperbolic shear deformation theory for bending analysis of functionally graded porous plates

The modern engineering structures require the advanced engineering materials to resist the high temperatures and to provide high stiffness. In particular the functionally graded porous materials (FGPMs) introduced are expected to have these desired properties, consequently eliminating local stress concentration and de-lamination. In the present paper, a new shear strains shape function is chose...
