چکیده

The university timetabling, examination and course, are known to be highly constrained optimization problems. Metaheuristic approaches, and their hybrids, have successfully been applied to solve the problems. This paper presents three artificial immune algorithms, the algorithms inspired by the immune system, for university timetabling; clonal selection, immune network and negative selection. The main objective is to show that the algorithms may be tailored for educational timetabling. The experimental results have shown that all algorithms have effectively produced good quality timetables. The clonal selection and negative selection are more effective than immune network in producing good quality examination timetables; while for course timetabling, the immune network and negative selection are more effective than clonal selection. A comparison with other published results has significantly shown the effectiveness of these algorithms. The main operators in artificial immune algorithms are cloning and mutation. For future work, these algorithms will be improved by considering other cloning and mutation operators.

Generating Optimal Timetabling for Lecturers using Hybrid Fuzzy and Clustering Algorithms

UCTTP is a NP-hard problem, which must be performed for each semester frequently. The major technique in the presented approach would be analyzing data to resolve uncertainties of lecturers’ preferences and constraints within a department in order to obtain a ranking for each lecturer based on their requirements within a department where it is attempted to increase their satisfaction and develo...

Automatic Timetabling Using Artificial Immune System

University timetabling problem is a very common and seemingly simple, but yet very difficult problem to solve in practice. While solution definitely exists (evidenced by the fact that we do hold classes), an automated optimal schedule is very difficult to derive at present. There were successful attempts to address this problem using heuristics search methods. However, until now, university tim...

An Immune-Based Approach to University Course Timetabling: Negative Selection Algorithm

The university course timetabling is known to be a highly constrained optimization problem, more complex than examination timetabling. Many different approaches, including evolutionary algorithms, tabu search, simulated annealing, and their hybrids, are developed for solving the problem. The negative selection algorithm, an algorithm inspired by the immune system, has successfully been applied ...

An Evolutionary Immune Approach for University Course Timetabling

The university course timetabling problem (UCTP) is a combinatorial NP-complete problem that has been subject to research since the early 1960’s. Numerous solution techniques have been applied to the timetabling problem ever since. This paper aims at formulating an immune-inspired algorithm, namely the Clonal Selection Algorithm1 (CSA1) and testing its ability in solving the UCTP against the Ge...

University Course Timetabling Using ACO: A Case Study on Laboratory Exercises

The ant colony optimisation metaheuristic has shown promise on simplified artificial instances of university course timetabling problems. However, limited work has been done applying it to practical timetabling problems. In this paper, we describe the application of the ant colony optimisation to a highly constrained real–world instance of the university course timetabling problem. We present t...
