Relationship between Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and Body Posture

چکیده
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are the major disorders of the cranio-cervicomandibular system. They usually result in alterations of human body posture. Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) lead to adaptations in certain body structures that minimizes patient’s pain and also reconfigures musculoskeletal stress zones. These adaptations if not corrected may cause deviations in normal body posture. Posture involves activation of various muscles that are controlled by the central nervous system (CNS) which lead to postural adjustments. Complex mechanisms that are controlled by various sensory inputs (viz. vestibular, somatosensory, visual) which are integrated in the central nervous system (CNS) cause postural adjustments. The stomatognathic system has an important role to play in postural control. This article reviews the relationship between temporomandibular disorders and body posture.

Association between clinical and cone-beam computed tomography findings in patients with temporomandibular disorders
BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the association between the clinical and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) findings in relation to bony changes in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD).METHODS: According to the research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorder (RDC/TMD), forty-one patients with type II TMD (42 TM joints) and type III TMD (40 TM joi...

AIM To identify the relationship between anterior disc displacement and global posture (plantar arches, lower limbs, shoulder and pelvic girdle, vertebral spine, head and mandibles). Common signs and symptoms of anterior disc displacement were also identified. INTRODUCTION Global posture deviations cause body adaptation and realignment, which may interfere with the organization and function o...
متن کاملThe Relationship Between the Stomatognathic System and Body Posture
In recent years, many researchers have investigated the various factors that can influence body posture: mood states, anxiety, head and neck positions, oral functions (respiration, swallowing), oculomotor and visual systems, and the inner ear. Recent studies indicate a role for trigeminal afferents on body posture, but this has not yet been demonstrated conclusively. The present study aims to r...
متن کاملEvaluation of relationship between curve of spee and temporomandibular joint symptoms in patients referred to Occlusion section of Prosthodontics department of Mashhad Dental School
Background & Aim: Thetemporomandibular joint works in conjunction with other neuromuscular components. Defects in any of these components or factors prevent their coordinated activity and lead to temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The aim of this study was evaluation of relationship between depth of curve of spee and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders in patients referred to Occlusion sect...

Abstract Introduction: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) are the most common disorders of the jaw, and despite their clinical importance, they are not completely understood. This study was aimed to evaluate the changes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images in disc displacement vs. osteoarthritis of the TMJ. Methods: In this study, 45 patients, inc...
