Taking Degrees of Truth Seriously
نویسنده
چکیده
This is a contribution to the discussion on the role of truth degrees in manyvalued logics from the perspective of abstract algebraic logic. It starts with some thoughts on the so-called Suszko's Thesis (that every logic is two-valued) and on the conception of semantics that underlies it, which includes the truthpreserving notion of consequence. The alternative usage of truth values in order to define logics that preserve degrees of truth is presented and discussed. Some recent works studying these in the particular cases of Lukasiewicz's many-valued logics and of logics associated with varieties of residuated lattices are also presented. Finally the extension of this paradigm to other, more general situations is discussed, highlighting the need for philosophical or applied motivations in the selection of the truth degrees, due both to the interpretation of the idea of truth degree and to some mathematical difficulties.

T-norm based fuzzy logics preserving degrees of truth
T-norm based fuzzy logics are usually considered as truth preserving, that is, taking 1 as the only truth value to be preserved in inferences. In this paper we study t-norm based fuzzy logics preserving degrees of truth, that is, preserving the lower bounds of the truth degrees of the premises. These logics are axiomatizable by using a restricted form of Modus Ponens together with the rule of A...
متن کاملRandom Strings and Truth-table Degrees of Turing Complete C.e. Sets
We investigate the truth-table degrees of (co-)c.e. sets, in particular, sets of random strings. It is known that the set of random strings with respect to any universal prefix-free machine is Turing complete, but that truthtable completeness depends on the choice of universal machine. We show that for such sets of random strings, any finite set of their truth-table degrees do not meet to the d...

متن کاملTaking Epistemology Seriously
Underlying orthodox evidence theory is a number of epistemological assumptions about the ability of reason to deliver true descriptions which accurately describe and correspond to the ‘real’ world. Drawing extensively on both traditional philosophical and contemporary, particularly postmodernist, scepticism this article provides a detailed critique of realist epistemological assumptions about r...
