چکیده

This study investigated how children deploy cues to prominence in a speech task designed to encourage lexical stress shift. The duration, amplitude and F0 of the rhymes in stress-shiftable words were compared in stress clash and non-clash contexts. In adults’ speech, lexical and phrasal prominence patterns reinforced each other and were not sensitive to context. In children’s speech, the prominence patterns were independent of one another, and the lexical patterns were sensitive to context. A year later, the same children showed more adult-like prominence patterns. The results are interpreted to suggest more sequentially organized and context-dependent prosodic units in children’s speech as compared to hierarchically structured prosodic phrases in adults’ speech.

Lexical and phrasal prominence patterns in school-aged children's speech.

This study investigated the integration of word- and phrase-level prominences in speech produced by twenty-five school-aged children (6;2 to 7;3) and twenty-five adults. Participants produced disyllabic number words in a straight count condition and in two phrasal conditions, namely, a stress clash and non-clash phrasal context. Duration and amplitude measures of syllable rhymes were used to as...

The interaction of lexical and phrasal prosody in whispered speech.

The production and perception of Dutch whispered boundary tones, i.e., phrasal prosody, was investigated as a function of characteristics of the tone-bearing word, i.e., lexical prosody. More specifically, the disyllabic tone-bearing word also carried a pitch accent, either on the same syllable as the boundary tone (clash condition), or on the directly adjacent syllable (no clash condition). In...

An interaction between prosody and statistics in the segmentation of fluent speech.

Sensitivity to prosodic cues might be used to constrain lexical search. Indeed, the prosodic organization of speech is such that words are invariably aligned with phrasal prosodic edges, providing a cue to segmentation. In this paper we devise an experimental paradigm that allows us to investigate the interaction between statistical and prosodic cues to extract words from a speech stream. We pr...

RUNNING HEAD : Lexical stress and phrasal prosody in segmentation

A large body of empirical research demonstrates that people exploit a wide variety of cues for the segmentation of continuous speech in artificial languages, including rhythmic properties, phrase boundary cues, and statistical regularities. However, less is known regarding how the different cues interact. In this study we addressed the question of the relative importance of lexical stress, phra...

The Role of Private Speech Produced by Intermediate EFL Learners in Lexical Language Related Episodes

Private speech utilization is accepted to have a critical role in the continuum of language acquisition. As a valuable device in studying learners’ talk during interaction, a language related episode (LRE) is any part of a dialogue where a student speaks about a language problem s/he comes across while completing a task. The present study investigated the role of private speech produced by Inte...
