چکیده

Using ultramorphological and histochemical techniques, this study describes the structural and morphological patterns of Polistes versicolor (Olivier) hypopharyngeal glands, comparing them with patterns of other Hymenopteran groups. Besides, the presence of intra-specific variation was evidenced by morphometric analysis of the secretory cells in wasps with different ages. The studied species presented glands with primitive characteristics, with secretory cells discharging individually in the hypopharyngeal plate. The morphological pattern found in hypopharyngeal glands was basically the same for all studied wasps, however, the length of glandular cells showed significant variations between individuals. Apparently these variations are not related with age.

SYSTEMATICS, MORPHOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY Ultramorphology and Histology of the Polistes versicolor (Oliver) (Vespidae) Thorax Salivary Gland Compared with Other Hymenoptera

The salivary system of the Hymenoptera consists of the mandible, hypopharynx and thoracic salivary glands. It is very important because it is related to various aspects of the life of the insects, such as pheromone production, feeding the young, food digestion and nest building. Adult Polistes versicolor (Olivier) individuals were dissected, the thoracic salivary glands removed and processed fo...

Spatial Analysis of Retinal Pigment Epithelium Morphology

In patients with age-related macular degeneration, a monolayer of cells in the eyes called retinal pigment epithelium differ from healthy ones in morphology. It is therefore important to quantify the morphological changes, which will help us better understand the physiology, disease progression and classification. Classification of the RPE morphometry has been accomplished with whole tissue dat...

SYSTEMATICS, MORPHOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY Morphometry and Morphology of the Antennae of Panstrongylus megistus Burmeister, Rhodnius neglectus Lent, Rhodnius prolixus Stal and Triatoma vitticeps Stal (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)

The length of the four right antennal segments from nymphs and adults of Panstrongylus megistus Burmeister, Rhodnius neglectus Lent, Rhodnius prolixus Stal and Triatoma vitticeps Stal were measured. The length of the antennal segments of the adults of all four species, 4th and 5th instars of P. megistus, and 5th instar of R. neglectus and R. prolixus followed the same pattern: 2nd>3rd>4th>1st. ...

SYSTEMATICS, MORPHOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY Morphometric Study of the Midgut Epithelium in Larvae of Diatraea saccharalis Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

The sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis Fabricius, has great economical interest as it affects the culture and industrial use of the sugarcane. However, there are few studies concerning the internal morphology of this insect. This work aims to study morphometrically the midgut and the epithelium along their lenght, trying to characterize different regions. Midgut of last instar larvae was div...
