Frameworks for Evaluating Accuracy in CAOS

چکیده

One goal of Computer-Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery is to improve the accuracy with which a given surgical procedure can be performed compared to conventional methods. Improved surgical accuracy can result in improved clinical outcomes, reduced long-term costs and less invasive surgical procedures. However, achieving high accuracy in computer-assisted surgery is a difficult task which requires attention to the technical details of component and system design. There are many potential sources of inaccuracy within a computer-assisted surgical system. A single source of inaccuracy can degrade the performance of the entire system, since inaccuracy in CAOS obeys the adage: “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link”. Accuracy evaluation of CAOS systems is an important and very challenging technical problem. While component and system inaccuracies can often be characterized in-vitro, it is much more difficult to characterize these inaccuracies under more realistic in-vivo conditions, ideally performed in parallel with actual CAOS procedures.

Evaluation of the Accuracy and Precision of a Next Generation Computer-Assisted Surgical System

BACKGROUND Computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery (CAOS) improves accuracy and reduces outliers in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, during the evaluation of CAOS systems, the error generated by the guidance system (hardware and software) has been generally overlooked. Limited information is available on the accuracy and precision of specific CAOS systems with regard to intraoperative fina...

Minimally Invasive Pedicle Screw Fixation Using Intraoperative 3-dimensional Fluoroscopy-based Navigation (CAMISS Technique) for Hangman Fracture.

STUDY DESIGN Retrospective comparative cohort series. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the accuracy and feasibility of minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques incorporating with intraoperative 3-dimensional fluoroscopy-based navigation (ITFN) for treating Hangman fracture. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA MIS screw fixation for Hangman fracture can decrease iatrogenic soft-tissue injury, but increase t...

Accuracy of Image-based Computer Assisted Surgery in Acetabular Cup Placement for Supine Two-incision Total Hip Arthroplasty

Introduction: Supine patient positioning in conjunction with twoincision minimally invasive surgery (MIS-2 incision) total hip arthroplasty (THA) increases difficulty of accurate and repeatable cup orientation in accordance with pre-operative planning. Investigators have suggested advantages of utilizing computer assisted orthopaedic surgery (CAOS) to successfully eliminate extreme outlying ace...

Algorithms for Low Power Hardware Synthesis from CAOS -- Concurrent Action Oriented Specifications

Low-power behavioral synthesis has been given considerable attention in the recent past. Recently, new hardware specification formalisms have been proposed where the specification is action-oriented rather than composition of sequential threads. We call such specification formalisms CAOS or Concurrent Action Oriented Specifications. CAOS models have low granularity concurrent atomic action desc...

The human relevant potency threshold: reducing uncertainty by human calibration of cumulative risk assessments.

The 2008 National Research Council report "Phthalates and Cumulative Risk Assessment: Tasks Ahead," rejected the underlying premises of TEQ-like approaches - e.g., chemicals are true congeners; are metabolized and detoxified similarly; produce the same biological effects by the same mode of action; exhibit parallel dose response curves - instead asserting that cumulative risk assessment should ...
