A new type of pyroclastic deposit on the Moon containing Fe-spinel and chromite

چکیده
[1] We present details of the identification of sites that show an absorption band at visible wavelengths and a strong 2 m band using the SELENE Spectral Profiler. All the sites exhibiting the visible feature are found on the regional dark mantle deposit (DMD) at Sinus Aestuum. All the instances of the visible feature show a strong 2 m band, suggestive of Feand Cr-rich spinels, which are different from previously detected Mg-rich spinel. Since no visible feature is observed in other DMDs, the DMD at Sinus Aestuum is unique on the Moon. The occurrence trend of the spinels at Sinus Aestuum is also different from that of the Mg-rich spinels, which are associated with impact structures. This may suggest that the spinel at Sinus Aestuum is a different origin from that of the Mg-rich spinel. Citation: Yamamoto, S., et al. Mineralogical and geochemical investigations of chromite ores from ophiolite complexes of SE Iran in terms of chrome spinel composition
Ten chromite ores from ophiolite complexes in SE Iran were analyzed mineralogically by XRD, chemically by XRF, and mineral chemistry by EPMA. The identified paragenesis of silicate minerals of chromite ores with the X-ray diffraction is pronounced differently. It consists of secondary phases formed as serpentine, Cr-containing chlorite (kaemmererite), chromic garnet (uarovite) with preserved pa...

The Bandan chromite mine is the main chromite deposit in Sistan suture zone, eastrn Iran. The chromite deposits are structurally tabular to lens-shaped bodies hosted by dunitic to harzburgitic mantle peridotites. Similar to Alpine type podiform chromites, chromitite pods are enclosed within dunitic envelops. The chromites show mainly massive to disseminated and also brecciated textures. Chemica...
متن کاملHidden in Plain Sight : Spinel - Rich Deposits on the Nearside of the Moon as Revealed by Moon Mineralogy
Introduction: Investigation of spectral anomalies in global data acquired with the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M) [1] has revealed a new, unique, and unexpected spinel-rich lithology on the central nearside. These spinel-rich deposits are found only among the Sinus Aestuum pyroclastic/dark mantle deposits (DMD) and are notably absent from the adjacent Rima Bode DMD. While these deposits are spatial...
متن کاملInvestigation of parent magma evolution and origin of chromites in Cheshmeh-Bid, Neyriz, Fars
: Cheshmeh-Bid chromite deposit is located in Nayriz ophiolite, 200 km northeast of Shiraz. The ophiolite sequences in this area are including ultramafic rocks (dunite, harzburgite, and pyroxenite). In this deposit, chromites are located in the mantle-crust transition zone and are enclosed by a dunite cover. Based on chemical studies of the major elements, chromite is depleted of Al and Ti elem...
متن کاملChromite composition as evidence of metamorphism in komatiites, greenstone belt, Mozambique
Archaean komatiites of the greenstone belt in Manica area, western Mozambique contains accessory amount of disseminated chromite grains. The komatiite rocks comprise peridotitic and basaltic komtiite. These komatiites are affected by regional metamorphism as all of the studied area. It is observed that only chromian spinel is preserved as the primary mineral and that all the other primary miner...
