3-D SPH simulations of colliding winds in η Carinae

چکیده
We study colliding winds in the superluminous binary η Carinae by performing threedimensional, Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. For simplicity, we assume both winds to be isothermal. We also assume that wind particles coast without any net external forces. We find that the lower density, faster wind from the secondary carves out a spiral cavity in the higher density, slower wind from the primary. Because of the phase-dependent orbital motion, the cavity is very thin on the periastron side, whereas it occupies a large volume on the apastron side. The model X-ray light curve using the simulated density structure fits very well with the observed light curve for a viewing angle of i = 54 and φ = 36, where i is the inclination angle and φ is the azimuth from apastron.

Modeling the RXTE light curve of η Carinae from a 3-D SPH simulation of its binary wind collision
The very massive star system η Carinae exhibits regular 5.54-year (2024-day) period disruptive events in wavebands ranging from the radio to X-ray. There is a growing consensus that these events likely stem from periastron passage of an (as yet) unseen companion in a highly eccentric (ǫ ∼ 0.9) orbit. This paper presents three-dimensional (3-D) Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations o...
متن کاملDetection of Gamma-ray Emission from the Eta-carinae Region
We present the results of extensive observations by the gamma-ray AGILE satellite of the Galactic region hosting the Carina nebula and the remarkable colliding wind binary Eta Carinae (η Car) during the period 2007 July – 2009 January. We detect a gamma-ray source (1AGL J1043-5931) consistent with the position of η Car. If 1AGL J1043-5931 is associated with the Car system our data provide the l...
متن کاملThe CHANDRA HETGS X-ray Grating Spectrum of η Carinae
η Carinae may be the most massive and luminous star in the Galaxy and is suspected to be a massive, colliding wind binary system. The CHANDRA X-ray observatory has obtained a calibrated, high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the star uncontaminated by the nearby extended soft X-ray emisssion. Our 89 ksec CHANDRA observation with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) shows that t...
متن کاملAccretion by the Secondary in Eta Carinae during the Spectroscopic Event: I. Flow Parameters
We examine the influence of the gravity of the companion (the secondary) to the massive primary star η Carinae on the winds blown by the primary and the secondary. The two winds collide with each other after passing through two respective shock waves, and escape the system while strongly emitting in the X-ray band. While during most of the 5.5 years orbital period, the companion’s gravity has a...
متن کاملHard X-ray identification of η Carinae and steadiness close to periastron
Context. The colliding-wind binary η Carinae exhibits soft X-ray thermal emission that varies strongly around the periastron passage. It has been found to have non-thermal emission, thanks to its detection in hard X-rays using INTEGRAL and Suzaku, and also in γ-rays with AGILE and Fermi. Aims. This paper attempts to definitively identify η Carinae as the source of the hard X-ray emission, to ex...
