چکیده

Most research on outcomes of preterm birth has centered on babies born at <32 weeks gestation and at highest risk of mortality and serious morbidity. Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in studies focusing on late preterm infants (34-36 weeks gestation). Early epidemiological studies demonstrated increased risks of mortality and adverse neonatal outcomes in this group, prompting further investigations. These increased risks have been confirmed and more recent studies have also included babies born at 37-38 weeks, now defined as ‘early term’ births. It now seems that it is inappropriate to consider term and preterm as a dichotomy; gestational age rather represents a continuum in which risk and severity of adverse outcomes increase with decreasing gestational age, but where measurable effects can be detected even very close to full term. In this review, we summarise current evidence for the outcomes of infants born at late preterm and early term gestations. Outcomes of Infants born near term

Introduction: The risk of morbidity and mortality increases in neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Various factors contribute to the prognosis of these newborns. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the role of mode of delivery on short-term neonatal outcomes. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on 215 neonates admitted to the NICU of Shohada-e-T...

Cord Blood Lipid Profile in Premature, Near-Term and Term Newborn Infants

Introduction: The fetus needs a considerable amount of cholesterol for the development of tissues and organs.  Studies have suggested that genetic and environmental factors influence the composition of cord blood lipoproteins.  In this study, we aim to assess the effect of gestational age, sex and birth weight on the cord blood lipoproteins. Methods: We collected umbilical cord blood samples fr...

The near-term (late preterm) human brain and risk for periventricular leukomalacia: a review.

Historically the major focus in neonatal neurology has been on brain injury in premature infants born less than 30 gestational weeks. This focus reflects the urgent need to improve the widely recognized poor neurological outcomes that occur in these infants. The most common underlying substrate of cerebral palsy in these premature infants is periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). Nevertheless, PVL...
