Mixed-method research for child outcomes in intersex conditions.

چکیده
Intersex encompasses a range of inborn errors of metabolism and dysmorphisms, having in common anomalous genitalia. The neonatal diagnosis may be unclear but genital atypia is not. Reconstructive surgery has been the standard of care for more than four decades. Although the conditions are ageless, selfdescriptions of long-term effects are rare, as are the anomalies themselves. For the purposes of this discussion, neonatal genital appearance is meant to reflect inadequate androgen effects in genetic males or inappropriate androgen effects in genetic females. This discussion briefly describes what is known about children’s experiences of and with intersex and intersex treatments, and how such experiences are knowable.

Adult genital surgery for intersex: a solution to what problem?
The desirability of routine genital surgery for infants with ambiguous genitalia is increasingly debated. But there is less discussion about intersex adults who choose genital surgery, despite evidence suggesting that the results are often unsatisfactory. This study reports on how six women with intersex conditions decided to have feminizing genital surgery and how they evaluated the outcomes. ...
متن کاملAmbiguous genitalia and intersex.
Intersex disorders are rare congenital malformations with over 80% being diagnosed with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). It can be challenging to determine the correct gender at birth and a detailed understanding of the embryology and anatomy is crucial. The birth of a child with intersex is a true emergency situation and an immediate transfer to a medical center familiar with the diagnosi...

Immediate surgical intervention to alter genitalia is a common decision, but is not the only opt...
متن کاملSex determination in crayfish: are intersex Cherax quadricarinatus (Decapoda, Parastacidae) genetically females?
In the Australian red-claw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus (von Martens) (Decapoda, Parastacidae), a gonochoristic species, seven different combinations of intersex individuals (with both male and female genital openings) have been described. However, to date, the genetic basis for this phenomenon has not been investigated. This study was designed to test a simple chromosome-based sex-determina...
متن کاملMind the Gaps: Intersex and (Re-productive) Spaces in Disability Studies and Bioethics
With a few notable exceptions disability studies has not taken account of intersexuality, and it is principally through the lenses of feminist and queer-theory oriented ethical discussions but not through ‘straight’ bioethics that modes valuing intersex difference have been proposed. Meanwhile, the medical presupposition that intersex characteristics are inherently disabling to social viability...
