چکیده

Frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) is a technique that produces a spectrogram of an ultrashort laser pulse optically. While a great deal of information about the pulse can be gleaned from its FROG trace, often it is desirable to obtain all of the pulse information immediately, in real time. Quantitative information about the pulse is not readily obtainable from its spectrogram without the use of a two-dimensional phase retrieval algorithm. While current algorithms are quite robust, retrieval of all the pulse information can be slow. In this paper, I describe a recently developed FROG trace inversion algorithm called Principal Component Generalized Projects that is fast, robust, and can invert FROG traces in real time. A femtosecond oscilloscope based on second-harmonic generation FROG is also described that uses this new algorithm to rapidly (up to 2.3 Hz) and continuously display the intensity and phase of ultrashort laser pulses.

Real-Time Measurement of Ultrashort Laser Pulses Using Principal Component Generalized Projections

Frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) is a technique to measure ultrashort laser pulses that optically constructs a spectrogram of a laser pulse. A two-dimensional (2-D) phase retrieval algorithm is used to extract the intensity and phase of a pulse from its spectrogram. We have improved a recently presented principal component generalized projections algorithm (PCGPA) making it easier to im...

Novel ultrashort pulse fiber lasers for micromachining applications

The development of ultrashort pulse laser technology will have a strong impact on the advancement of laser machining. Ultrashort laser pulses can reduce the heat-affected zone and the shock-affected zone, resulting in much cleaner cuts, and therefore higher precision. Also, ultrashort laser pulses have shown remarkable promise for processing transparent materials such as glass, fused silica, an...

Multidimensional analytical method based on binary phase shaping of femtosecond pulses.

Multidimensional chemical detection and identification based on phase shaped femtosecond laser pulses coupled to mass spectrometry is demonstrated. The method based on binary phase shaping (BPS) takes into account the accuracy and precision standards required by analytical chemistry. It couples multiphoton intrapulse interference of ultrashort laser pulses with time-of-flight mass spectrometry ...

Spatiotemporal mode-locking in multimode fiber lasers.

A laser is based on the electromagnetic modes of its resonator, which provides the feedback required for oscillation. Enormous progress has been made toward controlling the interactions of longitudinal modes in lasers with a single transverse mode. For example, the field of ultrafast science has been built on lasers that lock many longitudinal modes together to form ultrashort light pulses. How...
