چکیده

Pig immunoglobulins The pig immunoglobulin system has now been well characterized and has been the subject of two recent reviews (Bourne, 1971a; Porter & Allen, 1972). Three immunoglobulin classes are recognized which on the basis of their physicochemical properties and antigenic relationships may be regarded as analogous to human IgG, IgM and IgA. Some of the properties of pig immunoglobulins are shown in Table I (Bourne, 1971~). Immunoglobulin IgG is quantitatively the most important in pig serum and colostrum; two main sub-classes exist-IgG, and IgG,. Both sub-classes have a sedimentation coefficient (s) of 7. Immunoglobulin IgM occurs as a macroglobulin and, like the corresponding immunoglobulin in other species, possesses an s value of 19 s. The pig IgA system has been shown to be similar to that present in other species and it has been suggested that the main biological role of IgA is associated with local defence of mucosal surfaces (Tomasi, 1967).

The effects of organic selenium (Sel-Plex) on the viability of pneumonic Holstein suckling calves

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of supplemented selenium (Se) on plasma cortisol, red blood cell glutathione peroxidase activity (RBC GSH-PX-1), concentration of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and body weight in pneumonic suckling calves. Ten Holstein suckling male calves were randomly allocated to two groups and fed either unsupplemented milk (control) or with milk supplemente...

Improvement of anticomplementary activity assay for the quality control of immunoglobulin product: an Iranian pilot scale study

Abstract Background and Objectives One of the side effects of immunoglobulin administration is the activation of the complement system related to the high concentration of aggregates/large polymers in the production process. Measuring anticomplementary activity (ACA) is important in pharmaceutical quality control and is a criterion of spontaneous activation of complement system in immunoglobuli...

Milk leptin in sows and blood leptin and growth of their offspring.

Twenty-one mixed-parity (average 2.4 +/- 0.49) crossbred sows and their offspring were used to determine whether sow milk leptin at farrowing was related to neonatal serum leptin and pig growth to weaning. During farrowing, pigs were randomly allotted to suckling (n = 99) or delayed suckling (n = 89) groups, with delayed suckling pigs placed in a group pen apart from the dam before suckling. Bo...

Association between over-chlorinated drinking water and suckling, nursery and fattening pig death losses

Following our report on reproductive failure in gilts and sows caused by drinking over-chlorinated water at a pig-breeding farm, the present study investigated the impact of water over-chlorination on the different pig production categories on the farm. Pigs were given over-chlorinated water with a free chlorine residual concentration of 2.11 mg/l for seven days, from the onset of mechanical fa...
