چکیده

1070-9932/13/$31.00©2013IEEE n this article, we present a robot capable of autonomously traversing and manipulating a three-dimensional (3-D) truss structure. The robot can approach and traverse multiple structural joints using a combination of translational and rotational motions. A key factor in allowing reliable motion and engagement is the use of specially designed structural building blocks comprised of bidirectional geared rods. A set of traversal plans, each comprised of basic motion primitives, were analyzed for speed, robustness, and repeatability. Paths covering eight joints are demonstrated, as well as automatic element assembly and disassembly. We suggest that the robot architecture and truss module design, such as the one presented here, could open the door to robotically assembled, maintained, and reconfigured structures that would ordinarily be difficult, risky, or time consuming for humans to construct.

Self-reconfiguring Robots: Successes and Challenges

We wish to create versatile robots by using selfreconfiguration: hundreds of small modules autonomously organize and reorganize as geometric structures to best fit the terrain on which the robot has to move, the shape of the obiect the robot has to manipulate, or the sensing needs for the given task. Self-reconfiguration allows large collections of small robots to actively organize as the most ...

Versatility for Unknown Worlds: Mobile Sensors and Self-reconfiguring Robots

In this paper we propose mobile sensors and self-reconfiguring robots to increase the versatility of mobile robots in unstructured environments. Mobile sensors enrich the class of on-line algorithms that can be performed with fixed architecture robots by providing flexibility in information gathering and extraction from the world. A self-reconfiguring robot can autonomously and dynamically reco...

A Basis for Self-Repair Robots Using Self-Reconfiguring Crystal Modules

Self-repair robots are modular robots that have the capability of detecting and recovering from failures. Typically, such robots are unit-modular and carry a number of redundant modules on their bodies. Self-repair consists of detecting the failure of a module, ejecting the bad module and replacing it with one of the extra modules. In this paper we show how self-repair can be accomplished by se...

Reconfiguration planning for heterogeneous self-reconfiguring robots

Current research in self-reconfiguring robots focuses predominantly on systems of identical modules. However, allowing modules of varying types, with different sensors, for example, is of practical interest. In this paper, we propose the development of an algorithmic basis for heterogeneous self-reconfiguring systems. We demonstrate algorithmic feasibility by presenting O(n) time centralized an...

Distributed replication algorithms for self-reconfiguring modular robots

Self-reconfiguring modular robots have the ability to reform themselves into a wide variety of different shapes to accomplish their tasks. In addition, a group of self-reconfiguring modules can divide up into several smaller groups to perform operations (such as exploration) in parallel. In either instance, due to the large number of independent modules in the system, distributed algorithms are...
