Evaluation of decadal hindcasts using satellite simulators

چکیده

The evaluation of dynamical ensemble forecast systems requires a solid validation of basic processes such as the global atmospheric water and energy cycle. The value of any validation approach strongly depends on the quality of the observational data records used. Current approaches utilize in situ measurements, remote sensing data and reanalyses. Related data records are subject to a number of uncertainties and limitations such as representativeness, spatial and temporal resolution and homogeneity. However, recently several climate data records with known and sufficient quality became available. In particular, the satellite data records offer the opportunity to obtain reference information on global scales including the oceans. Here we consider the simulation of satellite radiances from the climate model output enabling an evaluation in the instrument’s parameter space to avoid uncertainties stemming from the application of retrieval schemes in order to minimise uncertainties on the reference side. Utilizing the CFMIP Observation Simulator Package (COSP) we develop satellite simulators for the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission precipitation radar (TRMM PR) and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI). The simulators are applied within the MiKlip project funded by BMBF (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research) to evaluate decadal climate predictions performed with the MPI-ESM developed at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. While TRMM PR enables the evaluation of the vertical structure of precipitation over tropical and sub-tropical areas, IASI is used to support the global evaluation of clouds and radiation.

Evaluation of short-term climate change prediction in multi-model CMIP5 decadal hindcasts

[1] This study assesses the CMIP5 decadal hindcast/ forecast simulations of seven state-of-the-art oceanatmosphere coupled models. Each decadal prediction consists of simulations over a 10 year period each of which are initialized every five years from climate states of 1960/1961 to 2005/2006. Most of the models overestimate trends, whereby the models predict less warming or even cooling in the...

Pacific decadal oscillation hindcasts relevant to near-term climate prediction.

Decadal-scale climate variations over the Pacific Ocean and its surroundings are strongly related to the so-called Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) which is coherent with wintertime climate over North America and Asian monsoon, and have important impacts on marine ecosystems and fisheries. In a near-term climate prediction covering the period up to 2030, we require knowledge of the future stat...

Evidence of Decadal Climate Prediction Skill Resulting from Changes in Anthropogenic Forcing

It is argued that simulations of the twentieth century performed with coupled global climate models with specified historical changes in external radiative forcing can be interpreted as climate hindcasts. A simple Bayesian method for postprocessing such simulations is described, which produces probabilistic hindcasts of interdecadal temperature changes on large spatial scales. Hindcasts produce...

Predictable Climate Impacts of the Decadal Changes in the Ocean in the 1990s

During the 1990s there was a major change in the state of the world’s oceans. In particular, the North Atlantic underwent a rapid warming, with sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the subpolar gyre region increasing by 18C in just a few years. Associated with the changes in SST patterns were changes in the surface climate, in particular, a tendency for warm and dry conditions over areas of North...

Decadal prediction skill in a multi-model ensemble

Decadal climate predictions may have skill due to predictable components in boundary conditions (mainly greenhouse gas concentrations but also tropospheric and stratospheric aerosol distributions) and initial conditions (mainly the ocean state). We investigate the skill of temperature and precipitation hindcasts from a multi-model ensemble of four climate forecast systems based on coupled ocean...
