Consonant and syllable frequency effects in stop and fricative acquisition in preschool Drehu- and French-acquiring children

چکیده
Phonological development is often described as reflecting universal constraints, with some consonants or some consonant-vowel sequences assumed to be mastered earlier than others. Differences in order of acquisition are commonly ascribed to universal constraints on production or perception, reflecting biological specificities. Recent studies suggest, however, that language-specific patterns are also observed. To disentangle universal from language-specific constraints, the present study examines Drehu and French acquisition data on stop and fricative consonants (/t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /s/, /tʃ/), followed by vowels /i, a, u/. Results show that the relative accuracy of stops and fricatives in [i, a, u] contexts in Drehu and French reflect the modulatory influence of language-specific phonotactics on the perceptual and biomechanical constraints claimed to govern the production of consonant and consonant-vowel combinations.

Language-specific influence on phoneme development: French and drehu data
This study extends a cross-linguistic collaboration on phonological development, which aims at comparing production of word-initial sequences of consonant-vowel (CVs) across sets of languages which have comparable phonemes that differ in overall frequency or in the frequency with which they occur in analogous sound sequences. By comparing across languages, the influence of language-specific dis...
متن کاملOptimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*
This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...
متن کاملInfluence of preceding fricative on stop consonant perception.
The effect of a preceding fricative on the perceived place of stop consonant articulation was investigated in a series of experiments. In experiment 1, we preceded synthetic syllables from two [tV]--[kV] continua with fricative noises appropriate to [integral of] or [s] and showed that more velar stops are perceived in the context of [s]. Experiment 1 also demonstrated a decrease in the magnitu...
متن کاملBilingual Phonological Acquisition of Preschool Children of Puerto Rican Descent
The purpose of this study was to describe longitudinally the phonological acquisition of 43 children of Puerto Rican descent who were acquiring Spanish and English sequentially or simultaneously from the ages of three to five years. Spanish and English language samples were obtained at the beginning and end of each year of two years of Head Start preschool (Times 1-4). Language samples were ana...
متن کاملFricative-stop coarticulation: acoustic and perceptual evidence.
Eight native speakers of American English each produced ten tokens of all possible CV, FCV, and VFCV utterances with V = [a] or [u], F = [s] or [integral of], and C = [t] or [k]. Acoustic analysis showed that the formant transition onsets following the stop consonant release were systematically influenced by the preceding fricative, although there were large individual differences. In particula...
