Inference of Soil Hydrologic Parameters from Electronic Soil Moisture Records
نویسندگان
چکیده
• Soil hydrologic parameters including field saturation, field capacity, initiation of plant water stress and plant extraction limits can be reliably determined from electronic soil moisture sensor records. • Soil profile wetting and drying occurs along a regular continuum of soil moisture following the advance of the wetting from to the effective base of the soil profile. • Frozen soil conditions and interactions between energy and water limited water balances complicate interpretations of fluxes in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum.

Assimilating scatterometer soil moisture data into conceptual hydrologic models at the regional scale
This paper examines the potential of scatterometer data from ERS satellites for improving hydrological simulations in both gauged and ungauged catchments. We compare the soil moisture dynamics simulated by a semidistributed hydrologic model in 320 Austrian catchments with the soil moisture dynamics inferred from the satellite data. The most apparent differences occur in the Alpine areas. Assimi...

Soil moisture content is a parameter of major importance for land applications at both watershed and regional scale such as hydrology and agriculture. In the past, a vast number of experimental and theoretical studies relating radar measurements to soil and vegetation parameters have been conducted. Such studies have widely demonstrated the sensitivity of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) measurem...
متن کاملMatching ERS scatterometer based soil moisture patterns with simulations of a conceptual dual layer hydrologic model over Austria
This study compares ERS scatterometer top soil moisture observations with simulations of a dual layer conceptual hydrologic model. The comparison is performed for 148 Austrian catchments in the period 1991–2000. On average, about 5 to 7 scatterometer images per month with a mean spatial coverage of about 37% are available. The results indicate that the agreement between the two top soil moistur...
متن کاملVerification Using Remotely Sensed Data
Soil moisture is an important hydrologic variable that controls various land surface processes. In spite of its importance to agriculture and drought monitoring, soil moisture information is not widely available on a regional scale. However, long-term soil moisture information is essential for agricultural drought monitoring and crop yield prediction. The hydrologic model Soil and Water Assessm...
متن کاملReconstructions of Soil Moisture for the Upper Colorado River Basin Using Tree-ring Chronologies
Soil moisture is an important factor in the global hydrologic cycle, but existing reconstructions of historic soil moisture are limited. We used tree-ring chronologies to reconstruct annual soil moisture in the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB). Gridded soil moisture data were spatially regionalized using principal components analysis and k-nearest neighbor techniques. We correlated moisture se...
