چکیده

Stellar evolution calculations predict the flux-weighted gravity g/T 4 eff and absolute bolometric magnitude of blue supergiants to be strongly correlated. We use medium resolution multi-object spectroscopy of late B and early A supergiants in two spiral galaxies, NGC 300 and NGC 3621, to demonstrate the existence of such a relationship, which proves to be surprisingly tight. An analysis of high resolution spectra of blue supergiants in Local Group galaxies confirms this detection. We discuss the application of the relationship for extragalactic distance determinations and conservatively conclude that once properly calibrated it has the potential to allow for measurements of distance moduli out to 30.5 mag with an accuracy of 0.1 mag or better. Blue supergiant stars can be exceptionally bright objects in the optical, making them prime targets for the determination of extragalactic distances. I describe how their photometric and spectroscopic properties can be calibrated to provide a measurement of their luminosity. I first review two well-known techniques, the luminosity of the brightest blue supergiants and, with the aid of recent sp...

Extragalactic Stellar Astronomy with the Brightest Stars in the Universe

A supergiants are objects in transition from the blue to the red (and vice versa) in the uppermost HRD. They are the intrinsically brightest ”normal” stars at visual light with absolute visual magnitudes up to -9. They are ideal to study young stellar populations in galaxies beyond the Local Group to determine chemical composition and evolution, interstellar extinction, reddening laws and dista...

Characteristics and classification of A-type supergiants in the Small Magellanic Cloud

We address the relationship between spectral type and physical properties for A-type supergiants in the SMC. We first construct a self-consistent classification scheme for A supergiants, employing the calcium K to Hǫ line ratio as a temperature-sequence discriminant. Following the precepts of the ‘MK process’, the same morphological criteria are applied to Galactic and SMC spectra with the unde...

Quantitative Spectroscopy of 24 A supergiants in the Sculptor galaxy NGC 3001: Flux weighted gravity luminosity relationship, metallicity and metallicity gradient

A quantitative spectral analysis of 24 A supergiants in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 300 at a distance of 1.9 Mpc is presented. A new method is introduced to analyze low resolution (∼ 5Å) spectra, which yields metallicities accurate to 0.2 dex including the uncertainties arising from the errors in Teff (5%) and log g (0.2 dex). For the first time the stellar metallicity gradient based o...

Dissecting Galaxies with Quantitative Spectroscopy of the Brightest Stars in the Universe - Karl Schwarzschild Lecture 2009

Measuring distances to galaxies, determining their chemical composition, investigating the nature of their stellar populations and the absorbing properties of their interstellar medium are fundamental activities in modern extragalactic astronomy helping to understand the evolution of galaxies and the expanding universe. The optically brightest stars in the universe, blue supergiants of spectral...
