چکیده

Aiming at an improved mechanistic understanding of the preferential oxidation of CO on supported Au catalysts, we have investigated the competition between CO and H2 for stable, active oxygen (Oact) species on a Au/TiO2 catalyst during the simultaneous exposure to CO and H2 with various CO/H2 ratios at 80 ̋C and 400 ̋C by quantitative temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor measurements. It is demonstrated that, at both higher and lower temperature, the maximum amount of active oxygen removal is (i) independent of the CO/H2 ratio and (ii) identical to the amount of active oxygen removal by CO or H2 alone. Hence, under preferential CO oxidation (PROX) reaction conditions, in the simultaneous presence of CO and H2, CO and H2 compete for the same active oxygen species. In addition, also the dependency of the selectivity towards CO oxidation on the CO/H2 ratio was evaluated from these measurements. Consequences of these findings on the mechanistic understanding of the PROX reaction on Au/TiO2 will be discussed.

Effect of platinum on Ceria supported Cu catalysts for PrOx process in fuel processors

The CO preferential oxidation (PrOx) is one of the critical steps in hydrogen production and purification for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). This reaction was investigated in the presence of excess hydrogen over Cu/CeO2, Pt/CeO2 and Cu-Pt/CeO2 catalysts. The ceria supports was prepared via precipitation method and Cu-Pt/CeO2 catalyst was synthesized by sequential impregnation o...

New DRIFTS-Cell Design for the Simultaneous Acquisition of Spectroscopic and Kinetic Data

A new design for a DRIFTS cell for in-situ studies in heterogeneous catalysis is presented, which allows for improved reaction control (i.e., gas flow, temperature, minimized background conversion) and for precise kinetic measurements. Specifically, the very low background activity of the cell itself for CO and H2 oxidation makes it possible to study the preferential CO oxidation in H2-rich gas...

Low-content gold-ceria catalysts for the water–gas shift and preferential CO oxidation reactions

Low-content (<0.6 at.%) gold-ceria samples were prepared by one-pot synthesis by the urea gelation/co-precipitation method, and by sodium cyanide leaching of high-content (5 at.%) gold-ceria materials prepared by deposition–precipitation. These catalysts, containing cationic gold in ceria, are active for both the low-temperature water–gas shift (WGS) reaction and the preferential oxidation of C...

Calculations of CO Oxidation over a Au/TiO2 Catalyst: A Study of Active Sites, Catalyst Deactivation, and Moisture Effects

The reaction mechanism of CO oxidation on Au/TiO2 catalysts remains elusive. Here, we employ density functional theory calculations to gain an understanding of several important aspects of the system, including CO adsorption, the active oxygen species, catalyst deactivation, and the promoting effect of moisture on catalytic activity. Distinct from previous theoretical studies, which tend to add...

Controlling activity and selectivity using water in the Au-catalysed preferential oxidation of CO in H2.

Industrial hydrogen production through methane steam reforming exceeds 50 million tons annually and accounts for 2-5% of global energy consumption. The hydrogen product, even after processing by the water-gas shift, still typically contains ∼1% CO, which must be removed for many applications. Methanation (CO + 3H2 → CH4 + H2O) is an effective solution to this problem, but consumes 5-15% of the ...
