چکیده

The San Andreas Fault (SAF) is the Pacific-North American plate boundary, yet in southern California a significant portion of the relative plate motion is accommodated by the San Jacinto Fault (SJF). Here we investigate the initiation of the SJF and its interaction with the SAF in a threedimensional visco-elasto-plastic finite-element model. The model results show that the restraining bend of the southern SAF causes strain localization along the SJF, thus may have contributed to its initiation. Slip on the SJF tends to reduce slip rate on the SAF and enhance deformation in the Eastern California Shear Zone. The initiation of the SJF and its interaction with the SAF reflect the evolving plate boundary zone as it continuously seeks the most efficient way to accommodate the relative plate motion.

A case for historic joint rupture of the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults

The San Andreas fault is considered to be the primary plate boundary fault in southern California and the most likely fault to produce a major earthquake. I use dynamic rupture modeling to show that the San Jacinto fault is capable of rupturing along with the San Andreas in a single earthquake, and interpret these results along with existing paleoseismic data and historic damage reports to sugg...

Stratigraphic record of Pleistocene initiation and slip on the Coyote Creek fault, Lower Coyote Creek, southern California

The Coyote Creek fault is a major strand of the San Jacinto fault zone in southern California. Pleistocene sediments and sedimentary rocks exposed in the lower Coyote Creek area preserve a record of surface deformation, stream reorganization, and erosion that resulted from initiation and slip on the Coyote Badlands strand of the Coyote Creek fault. A well-exposed section of conglomerate and san...

Inception of the eastern California shear zone and evolution of the Pacific‐North American plate boundary: From kinematics to geodynamics

[1] The San Andreas Fault (SAF) is the transform boundary between the Pacific and the North American plates, yet up to 25% of the relative plate motion is now accommodated by the eastern California shear zone (ECSZ). Here we investigate the inception of the ECSZ and its geodynamic interactions with the SAF using a 3‐D viscoelastoplastic finite element model. For a given fault configuration of t...

Southern San Andreas-San Jacinto fault system slip rates estimated from earthquake cycle models constrained by GPS and interferometric synthetic aperture radar observations

[1] We use ground geodetic and interferometric synthetic aperture radar satellite observations across the southern San Andreas (SAF)-San Jacinto (SJF) fault systems to constrain their slip rates and the viscosity structure of the lower crust and upper mantle on the basis of periodic earthquake cycle, Maxwell viscoelastic, finite element models. Key questions for this system are the SAF and SJF ...

Deep creep as a cause for the excess seismicity along the San Jacinto fault

Since 1890, the San Jacinto fault in Southern California has been the site of eleven earthquakes of moderate magnitude (6 < M < 7) and tens of thousands of small earthquakes, but none of large magnitude1,2. This activity contrasts sharply with the seismic quiescence of the nearby southern San Andreas fault. Although this fault slips at a rate higher than that associated with the San Jacinto fau...
