Measuring the Anisotropy in the Cmb: Current Status & Future Prospects
نویسنده
چکیده
The CMB is perhaps the cleanest cosmological observable. Given a cosmology model, the angular spectrum of the CMB can be computed to percent accuracy. On the observational side, as far as we know, there is little that stands in the way between an accurate measurement and a rigorous confrontation with theory. In this article, we review the state of the data and indicate future directions. The data clearly show a rise in the angular spectrum to a peak of roughly δTl = (l(l + 1)Cl/2π) 1/2 ≈ 85 μK at l ≈ 200 and a fall at higher l. In particular, δTl at l = 400 is significantly less than at l = 200. This is shown by a combined analysis of data sets and by the TOCO data alone. In the simplest open models with Ωm = 0.35, one expects a peak in the angular spectrum near l = 400. For spatially flat models, a peak near l = 200 is indicated and thus this model is preferred by the data. The combination of this, along with the growing body of evidence that Ωm ≈ 0.3, suggests a cosmological constant is required. Further evidence for a cosmological constant is provided by the height of the peak. This conclusion is independent of the supernovae data.

The CMB polarization: status and prospects
The study of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization is still in a pioneering stage, but promises to bring a huge advancement in cosmology in the near future, just as high-accuracy observations of the anisotropies in the total intensity of the CMB revolutionized our understanding of the universe in the past few years. In this contribution, we outline the scientific case for observing CMB...

The last years have been an exciting period for the field of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) research. With recent CMB balloon-borne and ground-based experiments we are entering a new era of ’precision’ cosmology that enables us to use the CMB anisotropy measurements to constrain the cosmological parameters and test new theoretical scenarios.

The polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is encoded with exactly the same cosmic information as the CMB’s temperature anisotropy. However, polarization has the additional promise of accurately probing the reionization history of the universe and potentially constraining, or detecting, the primordial background of gravitational waves produced by inflation. We demonstrate that th...
متن کاملSmall Hydro-Power Plants in Kenya: A Review of Status, Challenges and Future Prospects
Small Hydro-power Plants (SHP) are an important source of electricity in many countries. However, little is known about SHP in Kenya. This paper reviews the status, challenges in implementation of SHP and prospects for future development of SHP in Kenya. The paper shows that SHP has not yet fully utilized the available hydro-power potential. The challenges associated with SHP development should...
متن کاملLooking for Λ with the Rees-Sciama Effect
In models with a cosmological constant, a significant component of the large scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy is produced at rather low redshifts, z <∼ 1. In these models, the gravitational potential perturbations begin to evolve at late times. Photons passing through these time varying potentials aquire frequency shifts, an effect first noted by Rees and Sciama. Since the gra...
