Meteorite Scars in Ancient Rocks
نویسنده
چکیده
In a previous paper ' the writers suggested that some rexplosion structures currently attributed to volcanism may actually record impacts of giant meteorites which fell during the geological past. It is the purpose of this article to show how meteorite craters and th eir underlying structures might be preserved, and to evaluate the meteoritic hypothesis as an 'explanativn for three structures which tentatively have been assigned to other origins.

Established and Supposed Examples of Meteoritic Craters and Structures
Meteor Crater of Arizona, three-quarters of a mile across and' six hundred feet deep,, with its walls of tilted and faulted strata and its encircling high rim of pulverized and brecciated rock, is a spectacle for the student of land forms, of geologic structures, and of katamorphic processes. Standing on its rim, one is imp, ressed by the fact that craterforming meteorites are extraterrestrial a...
متن کاملMeteorites on Mars: Implications from Three Probably Paired Meteorite Candidates at Meridiani Planum
Introduction: The Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Opportunity has come across several possible meteorites, among them the only officially recognized meteorite on another planet, the IAB iron meteorite Meridiani Planum [1]. Three meteorite candidate rocks investigated by Opportunity-informally dubbed Barber-ton, Santa Catarina and Santorini by the MER team-have very similar chemical and mineralogic...
متن کاملAutonomous Robotic Meteorite Identification in Antarctica
This paper describes the development and implementation of a Bayes network based system for distinguishing terrestrial rocks from meteorites from onboard the mobile robotic rover Nomad. Equipped with a color camera and spectrometer, Nomad autonomously made the first robotic identification of a meteorite, in January 2000 at the Elephant Moraine, Antarctica. This paper discusses rock classificati...
متن کاملUnique Spinel-rich Lithology in Lunar Meteorite Alha81005: Origin and Possible Connection to M Observations of the Farside Highlands
Introduction: The discovery of spinel rich rock on the Earth’s Moon, detected by the M near-IR mapping spectrometer on the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft [1] is among the most intriguing discoveries in a time filled with lunar revelations (e.g., [2]). The M spectrometer discerned several areas on the rim of the far-side Moscoviense basin which had near-IR reflectance spectra characteristic of abundan...
متن کاملPetrography and Chemistry of Impact-melt Clasts in Apollo
Introduction: The preponderance of 3.9 Ga lunar impact-melt rock ages and the dearth of older samples of unequivocal impact origin, from either the Apollo collection or lunar meteorites, suggest an extraordinary bombardment event in the Earth-Moon system at ~3.9 Ga. We have begun to study another set of samples, impact melts and crystalline lunar spherules (CLS) within demonstrably old Apollo b...
